The first SEC title game to be played in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta and one of the all-time great games in SEC history. It featured third-ranked and undefeated Alabama as well as the sixth-ranked Florida Gators. Probably one of the most heartbreaking losses in Alabama football history.

I'm a huge Gene Stallings fan. With that said, up 22-17 why didn't he go for two?

His ultra-conservative nature finally came back to bite him in the arse. Lord knows why he didn't go for two. I wonder if he has ever answered that question.

He did. After the game, he said he liked their chances to keep Florida out of the end zone, and didn't want two field goals to beat them.

I think 2017. Bama and FSU will be playing the first sat college football game there. I think UGA is playing somebody on the thurs night. The giant anus will be busy

I was there and Stallings indeed went full potato late in the game. Alabama missed out on playing Nebraska in the Orange for a possible title (although #2 Penn State won the Rose, so it wouldn't have mattered anyhow).

I didn't even realize they had 2pt conversions back then. The nfl didn't have that option until years later, correct?

No,this was part of the "Bowl Alliance." The SEC winner was wed to the Sugar.The Sugar was then encouraged to select the highest ranked team not tied to another bowl. Note I said "encouraged" as a two years earlier the Cotton (a member of the Alliance) passed on Florida State and chose Notre Dame which sort of sealed their fate when the BCS started.

College was quick to adopt the 2 pointer after the USFL introduced it. Tom Osbourne attempted it in 1983 against Miami in the Orange Bowl, in one of the most controversial moves in CFB history. Nebraska would lose the game 31-30 because of that.

I give Osborne credit for going for the win rather than settling for the tie. I think he was trying to teach his players a lesson there.

College has had it since 1958.
It was a big debate when the AFL and NFL merged. AFL had it and NFL didn't, like the DH rule with the AL and NL.
The new NFL used it in interrelate play for a season, then dropped it, and added it in 1994.

i was a uf fan until signing day 98, so 92 and 94 are reversed for me in dissapointment. i remember watching the first 3 seccg games in the o'dome at a swim meet. anybody remember black and white portable tvs smaller than 5 inches and static? these highlights look nothing like the game i originally saw
