One of the nasty byproducts of the HUNH is that it makes the average football fan dumber by virtue of watching it. You sacrifice interest and excitement in one phase of the game for another and it basically causes attention deficit disorder for fanbases. They don't care if their team allows points because that just means they get the ball back quicker so they can score again. It's an ignorant way to watch football IMO.

The Aubs think crap-canning yet another DC will help them improve defensively. But how have defenses played everywhere he's run his offense. Is there a correlation between great HUNH offense and terrible defense?

---AUBURN BEFORE GUS---
Pre-Gus/Chiz/HUNH, Tuberville typically fielded mean, big, fast defenses that were among the nation's best. This, with a balanced pro-style offense. He had multiple different coordinators (Muschamp, Chizik, Gibbs, Rhodes, etc.) No matter the DC, the product was the same: great defense. When Gus arrived with Chiz in 2009, things went downhill quick.

---AUBURN WITH GUS---
Ted Roof (2009-11): At Auburn, fielded the worst statistical defenses in program history. Spectacularly awful. IMMEDIATELY after leaving Auburn goes to Penn State and has them ranked as 2nd-best defense in the Big Ten, 16th nationally in scoring defense and 29th nationally in total defense. Then moves to Georgia Tech in 2013 and 2014. Jackets win division and are in top third nationally of scoring defense in FBS. 12th nationally in turnovers gained. Suddenly knows what he's doing again.

Brian Van Gorder (2012): Produced some of the best defenses in Georgia history - top 10 in the country in total defense multiple years in a row. Won Broyles Award as top assistant in country. Then goes to run the Falcons D for 4 years. Moves to Auburn, suddenly forgets everything he knows about football. (Should be noted Gus was not OC during this time, but the defensive personnel was a byproduct of the previous few years of ruin under Chiz/Gus when they were scoring a billion points a game but also allowing that many.)

Ellis Johnson (2013-14): Noted defensive mind. Served on defensive staff under Gene Stallings during title run and also as DC under DuBose. Head coach at Citadel and Southern Miss. Also served as DC at Clemson, MSU and asst. head coach at South Carolina. Carolina defenses, also complemented by a wide open offense, still ranked highly nationally and were well-respected. Goes to Auburn, suddenly couldn't stop a team of Girl Scouts from raiding his house and stealing everything he owns. Promptly fired.

--GUS BEFORE AUBURN---
Before he went to Auburn, Gus served an OC stint at Tulsa. In 2007, Tulsa went 10-4 but it's defense was astoundingly bad. In 10 of 14 games they gave up 25+ points. In 6 of those, they gave up 39+. In 2008, they gave up 25+ in 8 of 14 games. IN CONFERENCE USA.

In 2012 during his lone HC year at Arky State, they had a good record but gave up point totals of 34, 28, 42, 26, 29, 27, 23 and 34 during the course of the year.

At some point, it might be wise to quit acting like they even care about defense or that Gus isn't the sole reason it's terrible. It's not going to get better as long as their offense is trying to play basketball on grass. Bear Bryant couldn't make their defense good at this point.
