Most of his connections come from Florida, specifically South Florida.

Athletes galore.

He let a lot of great (especially defensive) players get out of Miami when he coached at UMiami as a defensive coach.

Obviously he recruited miami well but how much of that was because he coached at "The U" and how much was it because it was Randy Shannon?

Randy Shannon has been at Miami, FL since 1991 (assistant coach, defensive line coach, linebackers coach, defensive coordinator and then head coach). He has as many connections down there as anyone. I'm willing to bet he had a hand in some of those great defenses through the years and also a hand in bringing in the majority of the talent that eventually stared in the NFL.

Who knows? He coached there from 1991 until 2010, then moved on to TCU and finally Arkansas.

I am not trying to say Shannon is a bad hire but I guess I really am trying to get the opinion of some Miami fan pre Shannon HC era.

There isn't much to nitpick about Shannon's defensive resume. He's coached and/or coordinated about a million All American and 1st round picks. I think he had 8 AA linebackers at Miami as a position coach alone. His resume as a DC was pretty stellar as well. His connections in South Florida are pretty undeniable.

Honestly is Randy Shannon that great of a recruiter and LB coach?

Yes, yes he is. He is also a damn good coach. It will be a win/win for whoever gets him.

Figured this thread would be the best place, but holy shite I'm so glad and relieved that we got Muschamp. I mean I'm reading the A&M board and jesus things are looking really shitty over there. Losing recruits, 3 coaching spots to fill. South Carolina also losing recruits because of the Ole Ball Coaches 2-3 year statement. I mean holy shite we could've easily been going through the same thing (probably not as bad.) That's such a huge relief.
