I'm curious what running game coordinator means as far as exact job responsibilities, but pretty hopeful this works out since Utah had a pretty good running game this year. Hope we nuke the rb rotation into oblivion

So what happens to McKinney? Wasn't he the RB coach? What happens to him?

Got it, thanks. Really hoping this improves our running game. I think white sees the field a lot next year

The thing I like about this hire is Christensen is a guy who has been a HC and around the block quite a bit. It's great to have young and energetic guys but it is also nice to mix in some pure experience. I think he could really help Spav.

Yeah that's a real good point. Missouri always had a good offense and running game with the spread.

Yes and everywhere he has gone he has produced good results on the ground ... all pit of spread formations, which is exactly what we need.

Also just going off vague memory but they utilized tight ends pretty well too? Could bode well for Jordan davis

Yes. They used a lot of two TE formations from what I remember

Not that I'm complaining, but what is up at Utah that Christensen is taking a demotion (I'm assuming he had playcalling duties at Utah) and Sitake is taking a lateral move in-conference?

yep absolutely. Think this is a fantastic hire. He's run a different version of the spread and actually stole quite a few concepts from Southlake.

primary differences I remember from Mizzou
- their 4 wide often included 2 TEs who mostly lined up 3-4 yards off the OT but sometimes slid fully inline
- OL blocking is man iirc, not zonal. Lot of pulling and other power concepts
- almost exclusively 10/12 personnel and the back is much more involved in passing game than the Air Raid. They designed pass plays with the RB as the primary receiver, something totally foreign to AR and the backs stay in to block far far less

Pinkel is an offensive guy though. So you have to ask how much of that was him vs Dave C? Think it's a positive he's run his own program because he understands the bigger picture. But he's young enough that this is probably a temporary stop. At 53, he can still reinvigorate our offense and then find a HC gig. Think he's bailing on Utah because it's just not high enough profile.

There's a lot of smoke about Whittingham being let go along with an entire staff purge

really? That would be crazy. They went 9-4 and smoked CSU in their bowl game. They are freaking Utah. 9-4 is a monster season in their history (and the best since they joined the Pac)

Agreed. Amazing hire. Can't wait to see who the DC hire is.

I think this would also put some heat on Spav since Christensen could step into the OC role easily and is more than qualified to do so

I find the hate on Spav to be a little misguided. I know people didn't like the results of plays and so they translate that to playcalling, but the truth is for quite a long stretch this year, it didn't matter what play we called, the execution just sucked.

We had experienced talent along the OL the first two years. We saw some problems last year as it got worse. But great lines make a playcaller look good. Our 2012 OL made every play work. 2013 was good, but had started to deteriorate. Our inability to run the ball this year basically gutted any gameplan.

There were a lot of issues to deal with this year. And yes, it really was an awful first year for Spav, but it's probably not fair to be judging him on the totality just yet given he spent a good bit of time this year trying to scheme around a piss poor OL.

Let's just say I'm extremely interested in how the OL shakes out next year because it (should) be the year a Sumlin recruit has a starting job. But if we end up with a line of our last four Sherman recruits + the walk-on Lindblade, I think it will speak volumes as to why Anderson was let go.

really early to say but I think we'll see something like

LT - Gennessy, Gustaffson
LG - Eleumonur, Stuckey
C - Matthews, Ledwik
RG - Cheek, Davis
RT - Ifedi, Martin

I don't think pipeline is the issue. That's a lot of talent and you could move them around and be fine (Martin may force Ifedi back inside for instance). We had a lot of talent this year. Anderson's eye for talent isn't bad. And he was a good recruiter. Honestly think BJ did an adequate job on pass blocking but the run blocking was just not well schemed at all. They were missing on fundamentals and it was getting sloppier and sloppier since he came on.

Additionally, it was his job to design the blocking scheme game plan. When Turner was around (and maybe Sherm did it), we had specific blocking schemes targeting opposing defensive weaknesses. LSU ran right at Garrett to mitigate his speed and turn it into a test of physicality. I don't remember us ever creatively attacking teams in that way. We just run the same plays, blocked the same way, and dare someone to beat us. That was fine when the OL was elite and they were executing. But as it deteriorated, it started to become a glaring weakness.

This is why he was let go.

I believe I read Whittingham has a pretty large buyout as well. Utah isn't exactly rolling in the dough. It would be insanely idiotic to let him go unless he's the biggest prick on the planet or committed wholesale recruiting violations
