Two bad calls...two losses...and a season squandered.

Think about it...
Against SC: 1st and goal at the 4 yard line and they start passing instead of handing the ball to a Heisman candidate running back.
Against GT: Less than a minute in the game and they squib kick instead of kicking it deep.
Forget the no-show against Florida. Above were two ridiculous decisions that by themselves cost an SEC East title and a chance at the playoffs. Both decisions made no sense given probabilities.
It makes you wonder if this program is limited by a coach who has trouble making smart football decisions under time pressure.

That's probably why we're in this boat. It's surprising how comfortable many have become with losing three games a year.

Why does everybody think a squib with not much time left is a bad idea? That is extremely common practice. It probably happens more often than not during a kickoff by a winning team with little time remaining.
The only reason people think it's stupid this time is because it didn't work.
1st and goal at the 4 is the same thing. Honestly, with HM at the helm, it's a pretty safe play. He doesn't make stupid decisions. Unfortunately he did that time. That one is more on HM than it is any coach, imo. Had he not grounded the ball, we probably would have scored regardless. It's the grounding that kept us out of the endzone, not the playcalling.
I won't argue that these were good calls, but by no means are they bad calls that cost us the game. We had so many chances to win that USCe game and we never capitalized. Don't place blame all on a single playcall.

You don't say? We need more threads like this one...nobody ever brings this stuff up.

Terrible idea. Is does hpen note than it should though.
You want the team to have to go as far as possible to kick the FG. Kick it deep.
If a TD is needed squib it.

The squib kick was not the problem... As always many of you taste the icing but not the cake... There should have NEVER been time remaining to begin with.

what part of "Finish The Drill" is missing here?..
what happened during the game is history at this point. Richt made the wrong decision by his own admission and cost the team a victory.

How do you feel about the call to throw on 4th and goal on the 3 at the end of the game? Was that a bad call too?

You lost me here. I think the 4th down call was great...does that mean I can't dislike the call to squib kick it and give the other team an easy shot to set up a FG try?

Sorry, should have been directed at the OP. That's a response to the 1st and goal call against USCe.
Anyways, the purpose of a squib is to keep the ball away from a playmaker. Had we kicked it to a playmaker who returned for a TD, then people would be bitching about how we should have squibbed it. Squib was the right call, imo. Ignore CMR's post game remarks. I bet if he were in that situation again, he'd squib it, as would most other coaches. And they should.

I dont agree with the squib kick when you factor in everything else. They had 3 returns for 36 yards to that point. Our kick coverage had actually been good all year. But even if you squib kick the execution was weak. Didn't get it far enough and it popped up to the guy in a hurry. Would have been better off hitting the pooch kick that we can't seem to figure out how to cover, or hell even kick it out of bounds.
I did have a problem with the last defensive play though. Not a big fan of spying the qb with a guy who is slower than the qb. Also we should know if they get close to the 35 they had a shot at a FG, have to defend that area better. That and the TO when tech was scrambling for the last second kick (that we didn't try to block) were head scratchers to me. Granted if we don't fumble on the goalline so many times this all doesn't matter, but still.

If you would have told me at the years beginning that Gurley misses five games and we went 9-3 I would have said you are crazy

good point. Hated missing out on watching Gurley this year. Although if you would have told me we would be favored in every single game this season and lose 3 of them... I would have said figures, sounds bout right.

look, we had two fumbles on the 1 yard line. Theres not much we can do when that sort of luck strikes. I'd love to blame bobo or richt, but thats just individual screw ups. That was 14 points.

ya if we don't have those mistakes then we wouldn't be in that situation your right. But we could do something about losing a game up 3 with 18 seconds left. Regardless of what else happened, we got to that point, you gotta win it.

yeah, defense shouldn't have allowed that guy an 18 yard run. But right when we scored I said "that kicker better kick it into the gulf of mexico". Squibb kick was one of those things that in hindsight was dumb.

haha, I was paranoid of the same thing. If we kick it deep and cover it the game is essentially over. Maybe i'm still recovering from our prevent defense experiences form last year but I was terrified of being in a prevent situation. We always seem to screw that up. I think a 21 yard scramble and out of bounds in 9 seconds would definitely qualify there.
