I've been watching football for 30 years and have never seen that before.

It's happened twice to LSU this year. It's not an inadvertent flag, it's an inadvertent whistle.

If the refs blow an inadvertent whistle then the play is ruled dead, and the team can elect to either take the result or replay the down.

The way the ref explained it last night it sounded like something they made up on the fly

The Lsu lineman recovered the fumble and advanced it, but the umpire thought it was a forward pass and can be seen signaling incomplete and he probably blew the whistle. Since it was an inadvertent whistle Lsu got the choice of keeping the play as is or redoing the down.

this happened 2x in the alabama WCU game. the first one was a WCU fumble on the first posession, picked up by depriest with inadvertent whistle. on that play the gave WCU a do-over on the down. They went on to score on that drive after a missed push off for a 21 catch. Identical thing happened later on in the game when derrick henry fumbled. on that play the result inexplicably was WCU ball, and then the next play a no catch that was ruled a touchdown without review. Later they hit depriest with a late hit on a guy who was still tight-roping down the sideline and the whistle had not blown yet, and missed about 3 blatant chop blocks (and called 2). You think you have seen a poorly refereed game, but you havent till you watch that bama wcu game. and it was an sec crew. guess the check bounced last week.

It's a bit more complicated.

An inadvertent whistle or an inadvertent signal kills the play.
If it's in player possession, then the team in possession has the option of replaying the down or keeping the ball where it became dead.
If it's NOT in player possession, then the team in possession has the option of taking the play where player possession was lost or replaying the down.
If it's during a forward pass or scrimmage kick, the only option is replaying the down.
