A recent study shows Auburn is one of the smartest cities in the country.

The Auburn-Opelika area ranked fourth in the country, just behind St. George, Utah (1), Bloomington, Indiana (2) and Ocean City, New Jersey (3).

The study points out the correlations between many of these places and universities and colleges that are located there, noting the high-achieving areas are "dominated by places with large concentrations of colleges, and those that long ago made the transition from industrial to information-based economies."

I'm assuming Nick Marshall lives in Auburn, thus making the list bullshite.

Yes, when I think of Auburn I think of intellectuals and spirited debates on the merits of Kant, Locke and Rousseau.

But since the places that post the highest growth rates tend to be those starting with low levels of educational attainment, we gave greater weight to the percentage point increase in the share of the population that is college-educated over that span
