Is it even worth the hassle?

Any tips on what to use to filter it?

My pot has a spigot at bottom, and I tried draining the oil back into the container through a funnel with a coffee filter in it, but the oil takes forever to pass through the filter and its freezing cold outside.....

Do you not have a metal colander? If not, probably not worth the hassle.

Or a piece of cheesecloth in place of the coffee filter.

Wife got me a great metal strainer and oversized filters a couple yrs ago to pour up fish grease. Works like a champ, grease needs to be above 100 or so. Think it was off cajuncookin.com. Not gonna help you tonight but worth looking into plus they sell replacement filters

I don't have cheese cloth and the opening to the oil jug is so small, i can't see how a colander wouldn't make a mess.

Also, i doubt the colander would get all the jank out. I guess what i also need to know is how important it is to get all the leftover jank out..

It's not important at all. That debris will be up to 350+ degrees when you cook in it again. I had a Cajun food truck and only used peanut oil for frying shrimp, gator, etc.. Used cottonseed oil for certain desserts like Beignets. I filtered my fryers about every 4th day and what I could not skim off the top would just collect on the bottom until I drained and cleaned the fryers. Without an electric commercial filter machine with a pump you are doing it the only way possible manually. It does take a very long time. But there in no safety issue at all with leaving it unfiltered. Filtering is just to extend the life of the oil which is obviously a major cost management concern for restaurant owners.

Cheesecloth or a fine wire mesh made for such. Oil must be warm still.

Awesome info. i appreciate everyone's help.

I found a wire mesh coffee filter basket thing that never gets used.....and i gave that a try. Worked descent. Had to stop and clean out the jank a few times, but much faster than the paper filters.

Dick Leverage, How long will that stuff keep?

I think that's the key.

Probably paper coffee filters would work if oil is still warm.

That's where i went wrong, i believe.

If you keep it in a dark ,cool place with a tight lid or cover it can last up to 6 months before it starts to sour. Three to four months for sure though even if you just store it in your garage or she'd. I had a 24 qt aluminum stock pot that I used to drain the oil in when I would change locations of my truck. Worse mistake I made was forgetting to do that one time and having about 2 gallons of peanut oil sloshed around and onto my counters and floor. Clean up was a bitch. Keep it and maybe you will use it a time or two more before 4 months is gone. If not, you can just chunk it and buy more.

I don't bother..we don't do a turkey for Christmas and probably won't fry again until next Thanksgiving..I reuse the original containers the peanut oil came in and throw it away.
