quote:I agree kids shouldn't be running around with replica guns. IMO it is shitty parenting to allow a kid a toy gun. Guns aren't toys so no reason to allow your kid to believe they are toys. I wont allow my kids to have toy guns, they will know guns aren't toys.
Simple solution, don't let kids run around with replica guns unsupervised.

Eh, there's a line.
No kid needs a replica Glock.
No officer should mistake a bright orange toy gun either.
Basically, make zany looking bright colored toy guns and we won't have problems. However, if the fricker paints it black or something like that it's all on him or his parents.

Most of them are black with orange caps, I used to have a little clear one I spray painted for our old airsoft wars back when I lived with roommates.

well in their defense the gun was in the waist band so no way to the see the tip and some said the tip was pulled off. Its really just a messed up situation all around.
Its why I don't think this shooting was malicious but that both cops should be let go from the force. I don't see a need to pursue jail time, they had a possible dangerous situation and they reacted with what they thought was the best method. It turns out it was incorrect and a tragedy happened but no way can the blame be put all on the cops involved. I put equal blame on the parents, the kid, the caller, the dispatcher and both cops. If any of that group acts with some sense then this whole thing is avoided.
The no toy gun thing is more about teaching kids that guns are to be respected and not played with as a toy. fwiw I'm not going all liberal and saying toy guns should be banned. I just think its better to teach kids to respect guns and proper gun safety.

Much insight. Thought provoking post.

The caller did what you are supposed to do. You see a guy pointing what looks like a gun at random people you report it. He went out of the way to make the call and even said it could be a fake.

Yeah, I had a paintball gun that takes mags and looks just like an M4. It's stupid.
ETA: they still make them

Toy guns have been around forever. And decent replicas too. But when you have parents who don't teach their kids how to use them responsibly then there's a issue. My brother had a BB gun that looked a lot like a real gun but he was only allowed to use it in certain places and my Dad taught him how to use it responsibly. And he knew how to deal with a cop.
The other day my Mom's work had to call the cops on some kids shooting out car windows in the parking lot with pellet guns/air guns. They pointed it at a teacher walking to her car as well. When the parents showed up the first thing out of the Mom's mouth was "can you prove they shot out those windows? Maybe I need to contact my lawyer?" and when the officer told her that he decided to call them instead of taking them down to juvie it was "Good thing you didn't take my son or I would've sued your arse".
Had my brother done that my parents would've knocked him into next week, made him clean up the mess from the windows personally, and made him work to pay them back. And maybe asked that he sit in juvie for a night.

the caller could maybe be let off the hook, I still think it is a bit panicky. I do give the caller credit for saying it could be fake. The dispatcher should be in hot water though for not relaying that to the cops. 3 people should be losing their jobs over this incident.
If I was a cop I wouldn't want to work with either of these two after this.

I have no mace or tazer. Most departments are actually looking at getting rid of tazers.
I've got an MP5 in the trunk, but it's in a vault. How's that going to help me in a split second? Hint, it's not

cops should have side arms and a nice billy club. mace isn't a bad option if the cop wants to carry it as well. a good whacking with a billy club should be the preferred method when dealing with a unarmed suspect. Brown probably wishes Wilson had a billy club to whack his arse with instead of going to the gun to protect him from the giant attacking man.

And depending on the size and level of intoxication of a suspect, tazers can be useless.

You should have both.

Why is this? It doesn't make sense for you to not have a non-lethal weapon that has some distance to it.

that's kinda my point, in a split second you should be using non-lethal force.
I can just about guarantee that unless you are on a special force that you do not undergo enough mandatory training to safely use your weapon in a high intensity event. Which is really the root issue, but because most people don't want to treat the root issue due to cost, I am trying to offer a low cost bandage to the issue.

Because of the cases where tasers have caused death resulting in wrongful death suits.
eta: I'm completely talking out of my arse but it sounds completely possible.
