I guess I have about 4 or 5 yrs left.

quote:

A persistent lack of sleep will land you in an early grave.

That is the conclusion of a 40-year study examining the long-term effects of sleepless nights.

Persistent insomnia - for six years or more - was linked to a 58 per cent increased risk of death, scientists at the University of Arizona found.

It was also linked to higher levels of inflammation in the blood, which is linked to heart disease, diabetes, obesity, cancer, dementia and depression

quote:

They also found persistant insomnia was associated with greater levels of inflammation in the blood (measured by a biomarker in blood called C-reactive protein).

Previous studies had linked insomnia with death, but the underlying mechanism for why has still not been shown.

Dr Sairam Parthasarathy, lead author of the study, said: 'An enhanced understanding of the association between persistence of insomnia and death would inform treatment of the at-risk population.'

'We found that participants with persistent insomnia were at increased risk of dying due to heart and lung conditions independent of the effects of hypnotics, opportunity for sleep (as distinguished from sleep deprivation), sex, age and other known confounding factors.'

I didn't sleep too much my first two years in college. I sleep a good bit now. I have some odd sleeping habits though.

As we all know, sleep is important and these results are not unexpected. Sleep allows the body to heal and it also helps daily function. Lack of sleep will also have lots of other negative impacts on your life. I tend to get about 5 or 6 hours of rest a night but I need to do better and start getting 8.

Quite the opposite. I'm asleep within 5 minutes of getting horizontal anytime after 8PM.

My doctors left this little tidbit out while they had fun trying experiments drugs on me.

Getting enough sleep helps keep the weight off, too. People who are chronically obese sleep far less than those who are at their optimum weights.

Go camping (with a tent) for a weekend. It will reset your internal clock. A doctor who is a sleep specialist suggested this to my dad almost two decades ago and it basically cured him. He goes about 4 times a year; when he feels that it is getting harder for him to get to sleep he'll pack up and go.

I don't understand, I don't ever sleep more than a few hours. But when will I die?

<---- 8-9 hours a night.

I'll go out on a weekend night and only get 4-5 hours often, but Sunday-Thurs is at least 8 a night.

I try to do this as well, but its difficult during some rotations and probably going to be impossible during residency.

Everybody is different and my body tells me to sleep 8-9 hours. Otherwise I feel like absolute dog shite.

I see some people get by with 5-6 hours all the time. Not me, I'm in a zombie mode if I don't get enough sleep.
