I remember it well. I had reasonable expectations on the season, but after we boat-raced a goodish Cincinnati team at home, I thought the sky was the limit. Then Justin Hunter went down with an injury early in the Florida game. Okay, time to temper expectations. That's one of our most dynamic players. Then Tyler Bray went down. Uh oh. Everything's falling apart, now. Let's just get to a bowl game...if we can.

Well, we beat an okay Vanderbilt team, a team many had picked to win in Neyland, and all that was left was a crappy Kentucky squad that couldn't tell their arse from a hole in the ground. "This is good," I thought, "we can get a win and go to a bowl and at least salvage some momentum for next year. The extra month of practice will be a big help, too."

Do you know what happened? DO YOU?! Of course you do. We lost.

As I walked out of Commonwealth Stadium that day, having watched my beloved Volunteers lose to Kentucky for the first time in my entire existence on planet Earth, it was plain to see that Derek Dooley was not going to be a long-term solution. Dooley was, in fact, clearly way in over his head.

And now here we are, poised to salvage a season that, like 2011, showed some glimmers that maybe our expectations ought to increase and that maybe the dark days were finally behind us. But just like in 2011, there were games serving as a grim reminder of how bad Tennessee still is and that the gut-punches are not done yet. But no matter, we have the opportunity to get a road win over a weak opponent and get to a bowl game.

All of this to say that I remember 2011 and that awful feeling, losing a game against a terrible team that we had no business losing to, that the rebuild was still a long way from being over and that our current head coach was not going to get us there. I'm hoping this weekend does not tell a similar tale.

TL;DR if this team loses to Vanderbilt I'm liable to fling my shite around like an ornery chimpanzee on copious amounts of meth.

I don't think that our fanbase can take possibly the worst Vandy team ever beating us to knock us out of a bowl. Luckily, this team is a much better coached and mentally stronger team than Dooley's.

I think we win by 2-3 TD's

If we find a way to lose this game, I say we start the coaching search the next morning.

It would break me if we lost this game

That being said its nearly IMPOSSIBLE for us to lose this game, this situation is very different from 2011 @ UK. Whether it be the talent level on both teams or what the team had accomplished to this point in the season.

Yes 2011 team had 5 wins just like now but didn't play anywhere near as well as this team has to this point along with the shitty attitude our players had at the time (I don't blame them for this, it's the coaches job to get the team in the right frame of mind)

Sort of apples to oranges IMO

I agree that the mindset is different. I never bought the conspiracy theory that the players intentionally threw the UK game, but I have no doubt that they just didn't give a shite about it. In that sense, there's no reason that we should lose.

But the Dooley era has left me permanently, irrevocably scarred.

I don't know if I could handle a loss in a healthy way honestly.

Good thing we are going in dry on those sum bitches.

There have absolutely been worse Vandy teams than this; not even close to the worst Vandy team ever. Not saying this team is good, but that there are Vandy teams that have been astronomically bad.

This. And not that long ago, either. Just seems worse due to the change in expectation. I've watched some truly horrific teams over the years...

Yep. A far worse Vandy team proved very difficult for some guy named Peyton Manning. I think a lot of UT fans have forgotten how Vandy plays us even when they're down. Tis the nature of the rivalry but I remember those games well and was at some of them.

1995 TN won 12-7....Vanderbilt's record 2-9
1996 TN won 14-7...Vanderbilt's record 2-9
1997 TN won 17-10...Vanderbilt's record 3-8
2000 TN won 28-26...Vanderbilt's record 3-8
2004 TN won 38-33...Vanderbilt's record 2-9

Yes, we have the record in the series but it's a record based on closer games than folks think even when we're good and Vandy is bad.

Boy was I wrong. It was supposed to be a freebie but it didn't turn out that way. Team played terribly.

They get super amped up to play us when they suck because we're basically their Super Bowl, whether they want to admit or not.

Nothing makes a litter brother happier than beating their big bro when the big bro is supposed to kill them.

That's why they always play us tough because they're throwing everything at us

Oh I think many diehard Vandy fans would tell you they hate UT more than any other team and for many even a bad season could be somewhat redeemed with a win over UT. Some of it is the in-state thing, they're smaller in size and outnumbered in a state obsessed with orange, but I think a lot of it is that for the most part it's been the last game of the year for both teams and no one wants to cap off the season with a loss let alone as many as we've dished out to them. I can't say I blame them for that.

There are a lot that think that way, but there are also a lot who pull for UT except when they play Vandy. I personally fall into that camp. I grew up as a UT fan, but went to Vandy undergrad. I now have degrees from both schools and my daughter currently attends UT. I'm all for loving your school, but I think it's stupid to define your fandom based on hatred of the opposition, FWIW...

I hear ya. And I know there are mid-state Vols that despise Vandy (I've honestly never understood that but I suppose it gets more Iron Bowl-like in the Nashville Area with fans annoying the crap out of one another regularly) but I think fans across the state tend to support both schools when they're not playing. Hell in 1960, Vandy students kidnapped the "keg" that used to be the trophy in UT-UK football/basketball rivalry from the University of Kentucky. The Vandy students did this as a way of drumming up support from UT students and Vol fans for their upcoming basketball game against UK.

It takes a certain variety fan define their fandom based on hating another school (those types are on a whole other level). Clemson-South Carolina and Bama-Aub spring to mind, as example of that, because a good percentage of their fans tend to care more about the other team suffering than their own winning but even then it's not the majority of any one fanbase.

At any rate, here's to better seasons for both teams. When all is said and done, it's good for our state and it's economy for our two major universities to be achieving things on and off the field.
