What exactly was that? I mean, how did other coaches on the sideline allow him to do that?
That was Mike Smith stupid.

In my opinion a bad call.
He tried to defend it today by saying that if he hadn't challenged and kept the timeout we'd have only gotten the ball back with less than 10 seconds so they thought the challenge was their best shot as they thought it was very close to be right at 10 yards.
But I'm not getting that math.
Run on 1st down takes about 3 secs TO.
Run on 2nd down takes about 3 secs TO.
So they are looking at 3rd down with about 1:30 left.
If they run you get the ball back with 40 seconds left.
If they try and sneak in a pass and throw an incompletion you get it back with a minute left.
So overall BAD decision on my part...but it was pretty close so I give them a pass.

Yea, you guys would have clearly gotten the ball back with 30-45 seconds left. Mizzou also got an extra 7-8 seconds on the injury play because they reset the play clock to 40 and it was already down to 30 or so.

It is interesting because we played it perfectly just 3 weeks ago against SC.
I think when Dobbs fell down on the 2 yard line going in for the TD and we had to burn TO #1 (Which I thought was dumb as well) in his mind he thought OK it is onside or bust.
Not his best moment, but we would have won the game easily if we just don't turn the ball over twice in the second half.
Missouri makes winning plays and you have to respect them for that.

Yep - the Dobbs read option play was a killer. Was surprised they didn't have a pass threat in there, especially since you guys have that in your normal offense out of those sets.
But yea, the odds of getting the ball back with 30 seconds left on your own 5 and moving down the field against that group of pass rushers, scoring and then getting 2............not very good.

I disagree with your math. A stretch or sweep would run a solid 7-8 seconds off the clock and then they're not gonna run a pass play their defense had held all game. They would have ran the ball and punted leaving you with around 15 seconds.
-eta: I didn't get the challenge just because you know the booth will review it anyways and it basically sealed your fate for the loss.

Think about it, the only chance they had was to recover on side, aside from that they were done. That said it really wasn't as close as it looked, neither kick went the required 10 yards and the flag on the offsides came out the second the kickers foot touched the ball, the ref just brainfarted not mentioning it the first time.

Mizzou got the ball back with 1:52 to play
1st down run - 7 seconds + 38 seconds = 45 seconds, down to 1:07
2nd down run - 7 seconds, TO = 1:00 min left
3rd down run - 7 seconds, TO = 0:53 min left
4th down punt - 12 seconds = 0:41 min left
So Tennessee would have gotten the ball back either inside their own 10 or own their own 20 with roughly 40 seconds left and 0 time outs.
Instead Butch burned a timeout on a challenge that had 0 chance of being overturned plus Tennessee had an injured player that caused them to reset the game clock from 30 or 35 to 40 resulting in another 10 seconds, which meant Mizzou didn't even have to run a 4th down play. It didn't lose them the game (because they would have probably lost anyway) but it was a really, really stupid move.

It wasn't just the onside kick challenge. Using the first timeout at the 2 was pitiful. He also went to halftime with all 3 of his timeouts if I'm not mistaken.

Not really. Sure, chances were slim, but 1% chance they somehow overturn that from the clear right call to clear wrong call.
5-7% chance they get the ball back with 40 seconds left and go 85 yards to score a TD.

Tennessee got the ball on their own 30 with 1:14 to play in the first half and ran out the clock (they had all their timeouts).
With a kicker who is almost automatic within 40 yards all you have to do is get 40 yards and you are in range. I know you have a young QB but geez.

I think he got swept up in the heat of the moment and made a bad call.
