WTF kind of backward arse logic is this? Every team holds, blocks in the back, roughs the passer, and targets - does that make it okay?

I am more interested in the question as to why the nerds feel like they have to go for the D's knees and can't block normally...

I'll be straight up with you.

It frustrates me to see GT linemen diving at a defender's feet (specially when they miss) cuz they could of easily blocked normally & made the play.. I'm a strong believer in "keeping your feet"

However.. I realize that it's a fundamental of Paul Johnson's offense & a missed scoop is equal to a "normal block" (a defender is not moving forward when
avoiding?) Also, the normal blocking of today is part of the pussification of football - the same way a helmet to helmet or a defenseless receiver will cause more knee injuries - a lineman if expected to stand up and hold onto another lineman will have it's ramifications .. Maybe RB's are disposable?

Its a physical game

Can anyone exolain to me why NFL linemen wear shoulder pads?

Are you implying that eliminating cut blocking puts RBs at risk because they're more likely to get tackled? In that case, maybe the OL should carry .38's and just assassinate the defense.

- Cut blocking
- Targeting
- Roughing the kicker

What do these have in common? Much higher probability of ending a player's career compared to the average tackle. Your grandpa's football players aren't built like those today. Players today move faster and hit way harder than they used to. Rigid helmets weren't needed originally. Why do we need them today? Think we should go back to leather helmets?

Thanks to science and the gift of time, there's been a lot of evidence recently linking concussions and football to some pretty serious brain damage and significantly shorter lifespans. As fans we enjoy watching a physical game with big hits, but we're not watching Roman gladiators. We're more civilized than that. We shouldn't encourage the continuation of a game at the expense of a career or a life if we can put rules in place to greatly reduce it and still watch a physically entertaining game. The recent changes to protect player safety don't eliminate the physicality of the game or take away the big hit ability. They can still hit and tackle hard enough to knock a man out of the game, but the rules are being put in place to hopefully lessen career-ending hits.
