Why would you approach a stranger and start singing to him?

Good thing that basketball thing worked out and he didn't have to fall back on his singing and golf talents.

This is really the only question here. I would quickly turn and walk away if that happened to me

How about...."go dawgs"?

Tough crowd. But I have agree. I think "go dawgs" might have served the same purpose and been slightly less sketchy.

Remember this was in SF. Walking up and singing to another guy is probably quite common. Probably why the guy was so nervous at first.

I was just there last week at Fisherman's Wharf, think how nice of an area it was when a fairly decent guy wearing a jacket, walked up to a light post, leaned against it, and started pissing right into the street.

when he got back to Georgia he was going to tell his fellow Dawg friends what a great time he had in SF talking to a Dawg fan that lived there.

What are you?

An idiot?

Why wouldn't I approach a stranger who was an obvious Georgia fan and let him know I'm also a Georgia fan so we can talk about the Auburn game that was going to be played that night?

This whole thing seemed to really hit home for you, didn't know if you'd be caught up in the moment that you'd never see him again.

or exchange emails

so you could be penpals and talk about UGA and west coast vacations and your favorite showtunes all throughout the year.

If so he's pulling a very long con. I see 3 options:

-this really is just a mid-60s UGA fan who has eased his way slowly into senility
-it's an alter
-it's really a UGA fan, but putting on an act for our entertainment

That sea serpent story really raised some eyebrows

It doesn't matter to me how you think I should have approached the Georgia fan.

All that matters to me is that we parted ways enjoying talking about the Georgia Bulldogs.
