This story is really bad, but I don't think UVA can be blamed for the Hannah Graham thing.

My thoughts exactly. If you are worried that taking a friend to the hospital after she got raped will impact your social/Greek status, please kill yourself right now. Or walk into the frat house and volunteer to be gang-raped yourself.

Now that isn't an indictment of UVa as a whole, unless that is the prevailing attitude there. Unfortunately there are probably some folks walking around on SEC campuses that would have the same attitude.

I do know that when I was at AU, if one of the girls we were friends with had something like that happen, and we knew about it, not only would we make sure she got to the hospital and the cops, we would make it a point to have a talk with her date and his friends.

The thing about her "friends" is that they probably weren't that good of friends. It says she's was early in her freshman year from a small rural town. It's pretty likely that she was the only person from her school in that class at UVA. Probably just hall mates or something. That doesn't excuse their behavior, but may help explain it. It's still totally inexcusable as a human being.

Read that last night. Incredibly shocking is all I can think of to describe it. Her "friends" deserve an arse kicking just as much as the sick fricks that did that to her.

People that equate what happened to the celebrities and the hacked pictures to something like rape, REALLY need to read this story. There is no crime that is comparable or like rape in any way. And it's insulting to real rape victims to try and equate having your naked pictures posted online without your consent to rape

Such a "harsh" punishment. And the sad thing is, none of those boys that did that to her will never have anything happen to them since she didn't go get a rape kit. Thanks to her "friends" letting her go to the dorm and do nothing.

I get more and more angry every time I think about this.

For their sake, I hope every one of them also voluntarily went into hiding. Holy shite, the things I would be doing if I were that girl's father...

I can't fathom how to possibly handle the rage I would feel. I mean that whole article pisses me right the frick off just as a partial observer. Her dad must be some sort of saint capable of a forgiveness I will never know.

Agreed. I have a feeling the guy picked up for her murder is going to end up tied to a bunch of the others in that area too.

As far as the OP, it's fricking awful. The whole thing. I'd have a hard time not taking someone out over it too.

He already is. Like 5 or 6 different rape/homicides iirc. He'll probably get the death penalty from what it sounds like.

shite like this just scares me to death. It’s amazing how many sick and twisted people there really are out there. It makes you question everyone you meet.

Absolutely.

For a long time, Colleges/Universities have done there best to keep rape & sexual assault cases quiet. I know that sounds like a tin foil hat kind of statement but I've had some pretty reliable people tell me that major schools have been doing that for years.

You probably know him better than I do, but that was my read. The allegations were shocking enough, but against Phi Psi? That struck me as strange. It doesn't fit with their image at all.

For what it's worth, there are incongruences in the account of the attack. While something clearly happened that night, I don't think Phi Psi is conducting gang rapes as part of an initation right. This is a trivial detail, but they do not have pledges in the fall. I also struggle to imagine a group within the chapter getting away with this sort of behavior. It's not that big a house and a number of brothers are active in sexual assault awareness groups.

-

The assault detailed in the story is shocking, and I think everyone here on grounds was appalled. This is not the UVa that we know. Rape is a reality of life, and of college life certainly, but this is a place where you can walk home alone. This is place where people do extraordinary idiotic things because they feel safe, because they (by and large) are safe.

The administration also gets a bad wrap, which is unfair. They are required by title nine to adjudicate sexual assault charges, and that puts them in a very difficult position. Their administrators, not investigative officers. Indeed they often have great trouble getting victims to prosecute their attackers, victims are understandably reluctant to take the stand. And how do you prosecute someone when there's no physical evidence? It often comes down to he said - she said.
