I'm going to stop following A&M sports. They lead me to a life of misery.

Good effort Ags. Very promising game against a great team.

I DO NOT follow basketball very closely. Flame if you want.
But ... "Dayton?"
Are they better than what sounds like it should be a technical college?

Dayton went to the Elite 8 last year. You weren't joking when you said you don't follow basketball

Nope.
I put it up there with yacht racing and watching paint dry. No offense to those who feel otherwise.

Still not sure how or why we were favored.

get ready for another amazing year of watching this team play against zone defenses until they prove that they can either consistently hit shots, or penetrate.
it's obviously early, but many of the concerns from last season appear to still be present.

How is it that a no-name school such the "Dayton Flyers" have a better basketball team than we do? That should not be happening at all with our resources.
I despise college basketball. (I said despise. Not hate.... "

Dayton is far from a no name when it comes to college basketball. The A-10 is a pretty serious basketball conference. Hell, UMass decided it was better to leave the MAC and be independent in football than it was to fully join the conference b/c they were worried the basketball team leaving the A-10 would wreck their bball credibility.

To be fair, Dayton is a pretty good basketball program, but your overall point is well taken. These are games, that an aggie club with a lot of resources, should win. And we almost did. So this definitely isn't a loss on the scale of last years to UNT at home, but there are concerns for sure.

This reminded me of the loss to Boston College in 2010.

Im not saying they suck. Thats not what my point was. My point is that these, in terms of power, small schools should not be outperforming us at all. The resources that the SEC has against conferences like the A10 or the WCC should alone be more than enough to shove these schools aside. Why are these no-name schools outperforming the big dogs who have more resources? We have the money, as does LSU, Alabama, Arkansas & Georgia, to be better than those schools. The money the SEC brings in eclipses any A10 money.
So again I ask, why are these no-name schools better than us with the resources that we have?

Getting a solid team in college bball is a completely different thing than getting it for football. You can't just assume Big State U should be automatically better than Small Midwest U b/c the size of a basketball team is so much smaller. It's much easier in basketball for "the little guys" to gather talent than it is in football. So long as your school is committed to having solid basketball facilities all you need is the right connections to the AAU and high school coaches in your region and you can do very well regardless of school size. You also seem to ignore that while the SEC technically has more resources, they also tend to have far more teams than a school like Dayton that they have to spread the wealth to. On top of that, most of the resources go directly to football anyway so the gap for basketball just isnt there comparatively speaking.

^What this guy said. Not everything in college sports is about who has the most money.
The biggest fact that most football first fans fail to understand about basketball is that basketball is a much easier game to dominate as an individual. This means that you can hit it big with 1 or 2 recruits and go way further than a team that has more "talent" on average, but star players that aren't as good. If a smaller school hits it big with a couple players, it's going to make a huge impact whereas in football, it will have less of an impact due to how the game is played.

You also have to think about the youth sports dynamics. Basketball and baseball are much more popular in the Northeast. Athletic youth are going to those games (or even hockey, although I doubt that's affecting basketball) in much greater percentages than football. Think of someone like Mike Evans. Does he make the transition to football if he's born in the Northeast?
