Is there a general idea of when a hire will be announced?

All Foley has said is he would hope it was before Christmas.

I would bet 1 dollar that a coach is already in the crosshairs of Foley and probably an informal agreement has been reached...Foley may not have talked to coaches....but he talked to agents for sure already.

With the dismal showing against Mizzou Foley unlocked his secret safe and got his short list out to be ready.

Said coach still has games to be played and it would not be kosher to start anything solid til the end of regular season....but for recruiting purposes Foley has to get a name out there shortly first week of December...there will be details to iron out but an agreement in principal should be done by Dec 8-11th at latest.

Foley can contact the AD at the chosen ones school right after the last regular season game on Nov 29th or in case of a conference championship game (my guess is that the coach doesn't have a CCG), right after Dec 6th but dealings with agents will be ongoing before then.

A splash type of hire has to happen to get recruits to rethink commitments elsewhere. I have gut feeling who it will be...but my gut is large It has to be someone who fits in at UF and will endear himself to all of the staff.
That's the biggest clue....who will sell tickets and unite the fan base? Hmmmmmm.

This would mean after the regular season so I could see this as well.

I concur. If they hire the coach Im thinking of...the splash will be felt across the SEC.

I can see this going one of two different directions...

Vince Lombardi

or

Mark Mangino

BTW I did say "if" in my post...but I have a feeling that most Gator fans will be happy.

We have to hire a name coach who has been there and done that more or less....Foley will pull the trigger on someone who will have the pundits at ESPN talking for a while...our stock will rise immediately....and I think dmb has an idea of who I am thinking of....and no...Lombardi is too dead and Mangino is too everything.

I reserve the right to be completely wrong or completely right. Hints:

Spurrier?

He would sell tickets and unite the fan base;
and most Gator fans would be happy;
and he's had pro experience;
his team is not likely to play in the SEC championship game;
and at his age, money would probably not be a deal killer, having probably already accumulated a good bit for his retirement;
and it would cause a splash across the SEC.

ETA: Oh yeah, he would fit at UF and endear himself to the staff.

I wouldn't mind if Spurrier came back.

He could certainly recruit better players, and his system seems to work on offense still.

If a team with resources hired this guy, he'd probably win them a natty.

Unfortunately he is enormous, makes Muschamp look easy going on the sideline, and will probably drop dead soon. Guy can coach though.

It is a state secret and hush hush... I am just thinking aloud. Foley is in a tough situation right now...he has to make a hire that no one will question/second guess.

Very few of those candidates out there. How many rock star type HCs are out there? Cant see us going to big twelve country...no one in big ten country and ditto pac 12. What does that leave?

Remember that W & Ls are not the primary reason Foley would hire someone...it has to be a fit at UF and the integrity, the academics, the total citizenship learning experience has to be part of the package. That really narrows it down, doesn't it? Hmmmmm who fits the criteria? A coach who is the type to donate $ 50,000 a year to the womens athletic budget at the school he is coaching at?

Ok...I've given it away...but in my mind its the logical thing for Foley to consider. Age is the only slight drawback...but if this coach could give us 4-5 quality years...then Im all in. He would immediately get recruiting juices flowing just by his name alone....and its one of his weaknesses...but in this day and age asst coaches do most of the recruiting...he can still play golf and enjoy his home at Crescent Beach.

If not Steve Spurrier....then who? And we only have to look at as far as Kansas State as an example of a HC returning and enjoying success at a ripe age. Spurrier would immediately reunite Gator fans and the fever of Florida football would be off the charts next spring. UGA would have to cringe, UT would have to cancel plans to bring their band to the Swamp next year....no rocky top. The girls school would get recruiting curtailed right now.

He has won a NC at Florida and many SEC titles are sitting in the trophy case because of him. He even brought USC from a doormat to a contender during his tenure. I firmly believe he wants to save UF football and trust me...he bleeds orange and blue.

I have always been a fan of Spurrier as a player and then coach...he went through the tough times as a lowly asst coach at UF, Ga Tech, Duke and then excelled as a college head coach and HC for the Tampa Bay Bandits. He is a pure winner and I cant think of ANYONE with his cred that we should consider.

His pressers would be worth the price of admission and you know he would not mince words, especially anything to with UGA. He would savor the tradition of SEC and UF football and he has adapted to the current style of offense that is dominant in the SEC now. His QBs and WRs would be wise to hone their craft.

Come on Foley....its the only logical choice, and we have new prez coming in and that helps too with the $$$$ being generated for the athletic dept.
