With Saturday night’s 25-20 victory against Mississippi State, University of Alabama coach Nick Saban recorded his fifth win against a team ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press Poll.

That’s more than anyone else since the poll was created in 1936.

Overall, Saban is 5-2 in those games, 4-1 with the Crimson Tide.

Only eight other coaches have three or more wins against No. 1 teams:

Name, record
Nick Saban 5-2
Joe Paterno 4-8
Lou Holtz 4-2
Jimmy Johnson 4-1
Jack Mollenkopf 4-2
Paul W. “Bear” Bryant 3-3
Dennis Erickson 3-3
Bo Schembechler 3-5-1
Barry Switzer 3-2-2

Saban has beaten more #1 AP teams than anyone in the history of college football. The includes legendary coaches Lou Holtz, Bear, Joe Paterno.

Here's hoping somehow Alabama gets reshuffled to #2 this year so he can add another one to this list.

You know what that stat tells me?

Tells me Nick Saban wasn't ranked #1 at the time those games were played. What a loser.

Is he 1-1 with LSU? If so, Geaux Tigers.

Spurrier must just have 2? He has 1 here, beating Bama in '10, and FSU would've been #1 in '96.

I don't think he ever faced a #1 at LSU. His other win over #1 was at Michigan State.

He defeated the BCS #1 OU in Jan. '04 for the title.

But this has nothing to do with the BCS.
