Why does EJ have a great rep as a DC?

Serious question. The only thing I knew about him before Gus hired him was we smoked him while at USCe, and he sucked as a HC at Southern Miss. I also remember USCe having terrible issues in the defensive backfield. So, why is he good?

ETA:

Also, he bitched and moaned about the HUNO, and I see he still has issues with it.

Was not impressed with the hire from the get-go.

Because Lawing, DL coach at UF, produced some badass players

Because he had a top-ten defense at USC running the 4-2-5?

I'm not going to sit here and defend him for what he's done here, but I love how people magically forget that.

I am just asking why he is respected. Not knocking him. I remember USCe fans having issues with him. His last 5-6 years have not yielded good results on the field.

This part is most important. In addition to thefact that whateverwas going right at USC is going wrong now that he left

This isn't true. I live in Columbia. Wife's family are USC fans. They would take him back in a heartbeat.

While it would be nice if he tweaked position coaches perhaps, I am giving him another year before I judge too harshly on his performance here.

I personally am fine with him getting another year unless there is any possiblity that Auburn could land a DC such as Muschamp.

We need something to change at DB coach. I wouldn't be opposed to DB change then add a LB ST coach

Oh and fire Scott fricking Fountain

EJ's total/scoring defense rankings since 1997:

ALABAMA
1997 #58 / #47
1998 #59 / #40
1999 #9 / #21
2000 #35 / #42

MISSISSIPPI STATE
2004 #51 / #60
2005 #29 / #44
2006 #41 / #83
2007 #21 / #35

SOUTH CAROLINA
2008 #13 / #31
2009 #15 / #24
2010 #46 / #43
2011 #3 / #11

That's a pretty solid resume if you ask me, particularly when you consider some of the talent deficiencies with which he had to work over the years. I'm still willing to go along with the theory that our problems stem from poor development under the previous staff, and possibly some negative chemistry amongst the secondary players and their coaches.

If it were up to me I'd give EJ another year to show some improvement, and encourage him to consider making a couple of staff changes.

We could hire Lewig (sp?) and move Graner to TE coach. Also, bring TRob home.

All we need is to hang around 30 in total D. I started the thread to gauge his talents (development, recruiting, etc.). Seems like he is more if a Chavis type DC. I am giving him another year to see what he can do without Chiz's players.

Scott Fountain is the most likely of all coaches to be replaced next year. If you remember, he wasn't even originally supposed to be part of the staff.

Correct. Originally Gus hired Rich Bisaccia which would have been amazing had the Cowboys not come along and fricked it up for us.

I live in the Midlands of SC and I don't know any fans that would take him back. He was seen as good, but benefitting from two great recruiters and the energy the Old Ball Coach brought.

Unless you could get some home run guy I say give him another year. The mods have all but told us Auburn can't afford to get rid of him.

Didn't help that Carl Lawson was injured and we lost a first rounder on the DL.
