Here's the problem. This the kind of thinking that just blows.

Auburn played more "physical" against Georgia, Johnson said, but limiting explosive plays continues to be an issue. Auburn plays well for 55 to 60 snaps in each game, Johnson said, but then looks lost on 15 plays.

The five-game skid is one of the worst defensive runs in Auburn history, surrendering 179 points and 2,356 yards of total offense while going 2-3, including the first back-to-back losses in Gus Malzahn’s tenure as a head coach.

During the recent run of defensive futility, Auburn is giving up roughly 4.9 yards per rush, 13.36 yards per pass and a total of 22 touchdowns after allowing just nine total touchdowns through the first five games this season.

“We talk about it and one week it'll be tackling, one week it's busted assignments — somebody turning somebody loose or something on a coverage assignment, or maybe a blitz,” Johnson said. “So, it's been a variety of things and the players are frustrated, too.”

Frustration has been rampant, especially around the Auburn fanbase, with many calling for a change among the Tigers coaching staff — at least on the defensive side of the ball.

For his part, Johnson admits he has heard a lot of the criticism surrounding his defense and his job.

But with roughly four decades of coaching experience under his belt, being on the wrong end of a fanbase’s ire is nothing new to the 62-year-old.

We hit Gurley in the backfield on about 75% of his runs. Even Chubb at the beginning of the game should have been stopped at/near the LOS most runs. Playing "physical" doesn't mean you can tackle.

Sounds right.

So he is often criticized for poor defense?

After being in the top 25 in defense after the LSU game, something happened. I dont think its entirely on Johnson at all. Its the players IMO. Not sure whats going on in that locker room.

I tend to agree. I feel this is more of a locker room issue than anything else.

This is key. Something is defintely going on. I do think some changes need to be made and I think they will.

His senile old arse has gotta go. No wonder our players look clueless.

I would tend to agree with the locker room stuff. I mean, you could argue that its no coincidence that the defense started to decline around the time our schedule got harder, but I just dont think thats it. Its just been such a huge drop that I have to think there's some extra stuff going on. I keep going back to wondering if there was some truth to the Whitehead stuff because the timing is suspect.

I would like to see Auburn pull some defensive staff in with some name driven excitement.....Im not sure Ellis Johnson brings that. Also, how does the 4-2-5 play with recruits?

What's the rumors with whitehead? He swung at a coach? Gets suspended and then the defense crashes?

So does that mean they're all mad at a coach?

Some truth? If there were a way to quantify it, I would bet you anything it has everything to do with it. Plus whatever other crap with arrests and fights. Leadership and Chemistry can overcome the BS we have witnessed the last 4 weeks. Sadly we have neither. And spare me the 'players don't care' if someone gets arrested. When it's the face of the program, it matters.

AUGIRL7 seems to think changes will be made, maybe with Melvin Smith and Charlie Harbison (though she remains skeptical because those are Ellis Johnson's "guys"), and that some of the players leaving will also help. Neither have really done much on the recruiting trail and apparently they and players don't get along. I have no idea either way...

Defensively if they don't fire EJ then I wouldn't fire anyone. Most of the problems seem to be from the older Chizik players anyways and they are the ones that are probably leading what's going on in the locker room. We had a "lazy" problem and them quitting before. Let them graduate and rewire the new guys.

No pressure from the Front 7 is just as bad. At least we have some picks. Geeze - we've had sacks in one game against a team that's Oline was hurt. How do we not get a pass rush with that group?

Who is the leader on the D? Who hits hard? I don't know of anyone.
