It has been a controversy for years whether or not people were full of shite who sighted mountain lions in Arkansas. I have personally heard a few times what I thought must have been a mountain lion while out hunting in the Ouachitas.

Now a guy has finally shot and killed one.

Pretty cool to have confirmation that at least one is in the state. If there's one there's probably more. Sucks that it died though.

RIP lil guy

but can't blame the hunter if he really felt threatened

If it was truly a case of self defense then I can understand. If not and the hunter just thought it would be cool to shoot a mountain lion then he needs to be prosecuted (if they are on any endangered species list).

I've hunted all my life and was taught from day one "Don't shoot it if you aren't going to eat it". Unfortunately there are some bad apples out there that go by the "If you see it shoot it" rule.

I didn't even know this was a question..

I've always gone by the "if you don't plan to eat it, don't shoot it.. unless it's planning to eat you" rule.

Ramer told officials he felt threatened and fired, which regulations allow.

I've probably done more hunting than this guy and there's very little chance the panther presented a real threat.

Here's an article discussing the red wolves, black bears, and mountain lions in Arkansas. LINK

The red wolves are gone from the state (outside of the football team), the black bears have been hunted for several years now, and mountain lion sightings have been reported with the general issue being whether the specimens were captive and released/escaped into the wild.

Apart from Louisiana and their swamp creatures, we have the craziest wildlife in this part of the country. Bear, elk, mountain lions.

I read where the other day a guy in southern Missouri hit a 600 lb black bear with his car. I'm sure we have those big suckers rolling around out in the Ozarks and Ouachitas, too.

I've never seen a 600lb'r but bears in the 350lb range roam out in SW Washington county.

I wish we had turkey out there I think the coyotes keep them away.

Here's that 600 lb black bear story: LINK

It happened near Thayer, which is just across the state line (excuse me, BATTLE LINE) from Mammoth Spring.

I live outside of Fayetteville. We had an encounter the night Petrino was fired. I walked outside after hearing about the coach's firing.
I could hear screaming coming from the neighbor's house about 200 yards away. I thought it was a domestic dispute over the Petrino incident.Lol
I started walking towards the house to see if I needed to call 911. Turns out nobody was home. The "scream" came directly over a major deer trail. I was unarmed & 100yards from the big cat. Thats when the hair on the back of my neck stood up. I called the AGFC, they verified that we have Mt Lions in Ark, contrary to their public opinoin. At that point, I felt lucky to not have been attacked.

Since there officially no breeding populations of mountain lions in Arkansas, (right) there are no regulations. If he felt threatened, he was within the law in shooting it.

Gave ya one Rev. (countered with an upvote so as not to throw off your karma)

Granted there have been confirmed attacks on humans by Mountain Lions but I've met many humans that I would cheer against in a lion fight!

Hate to see such a magnificent creature and one of natures true predators killed.

There have always been mountain lions in Arkansas and Louisiana.

There hasn't been a sustained breeding population though.

This I don't understand.

If there are more than one of a species, and they are of different genders, then naturally they well find a way to mate and therefor extend the species.

If they don't then the species will cease to exist at the end of their life cycle.

It would seem more appropriate to regulate the protection of a known native species (though not prolific in current numbers) if it is deemed that they do exist in the wild.

Did I say species enough???

Big cats in Arkansas is a good thing. I too have a hard time believing the guy was in any clear danger. Either way it's too bad this cat had to go down.
