you guys have been fortunate to have two of the best all time coaches lead your program in the history of college football. we all know how high you place the bear, what does saban have to do, in your minds, to get to the bears' level and surpass it.

Nothing. They are on two different planes.

I think he's already approaching it, to be honest - particularly with the younger crowd.
Coach Bryant won 6 National Championships in 28 years. Coach Saban has won 3 for Bama in 7 seasons. If he wins a couple more - Bryant Denny Stadium could end up being Bryant Saban Stadium. Or Saban field at Bryant Denny.

for me, 2 maybe 3 more sec titles would be a bigger accomplishment than another national championship with the way shite is set up now and how competitive the sec and esp sec west is.

- Win a championship or two in the playoff era.
- Win at least 2-3 more SEC Titles
- Maintain a +66% winning percentage over AU and quit losing to AU in some epic fashion

This.
If you can't dominate your rivals then who are you really dominating?

From a neutral perspective, it doesn't matter what Saban does, in terms of being as highly regarded as Bryant.
Bryant was truly the last of the "larger than life" Southern coaching figures.
Saban, especially if he wins one or two more national championships, will be considered his equal on the football field, but will never be considered his equal in the hearts of the South.

I don't know about that. Most people outside of the state of Louisiana give him tremendous amounts of admiration and respect.

to bammers, it's like the Holy Trinity:
The Thomas, the Bahr, and the Holy Saban.

Coaching legacy may be equal I suppose. But the thing with Bear was that he was an almost mythical being. You hear stories all the time of things Bear said or did that encouraged and built up character. Saban is more of a business man, not a man of many quotable phrases or stories of great character. They are both winners, just two entirely different people.

Wade put Bama and southern football in general on the map
Thomas did coach the Bear, but Bear's mind was set to play for Alabama after hearing Wade's team beat Washington in the Rose Bowl on the radio.

Maintain? He'd have to have a 66% winning percentage over AU to be able to maintain it.

As someone who only lived through the Curry, Stallings, DuBose, Price, Fran, Shula eras............Saban is #1.
All our generation heard from our parents was how incredible their 4 years in Tuscaloosa were, how they only saw the Tide lose 2 games, how the lines for games would be Alabama -47, etc. Until Saban came around all that stuff almost pissed me off more than make me happy because I never experienced any of it.

there's nothing he can do that would equate to bear's record in the minds of older fans ... the number of sec titles alone is probably unapproachable simply because of the title game and how competitive the conference is ... for anyone my age and younger (mid 40s), if he won 2 more nattys and 3-5 more sec titles, then he would be near bear ...

Shitty posts don't exactly hurt feelings. They just make the shitty poster look stupid.
You'll never fit in here.

Different times and styles make it difficult to compare their legacies. Yes, Saban put together a great run of 3 titles in 4 years. Bryant won 3 in a 4 year period as well. OK, as an Arkansas fan, I'll add that the '64 title should be ours but moving along...
None of that really matters because Bryant was a larger then life figure, a giant who over shadowed not just Southern football, but Southern culture. It is impossible to do justice to just how important he was to not just Alabama but the whole of the South during a time when we were looked down upon as hayseed yokels without indoor plumbing. For as good as Saban is at winning he just doesn't command that sense of awe that the Bear did.

In terms of accomplishments, Saban may go down as the GOAT Bama coach... With that said, I'm not sure Saban will ever be as beloved as the Bear was... He was "one of ours". Bryant loved Alabama and people loved him. I think Saban is content at Alabama but I don't think his heart is w/Bama or for any coaching stop that he has ever made. I'm not sure if Saban will ever embrace Bama or be embraced by Bama fans like Bryant was. "Mama" called Bear home. College football called Saban.
With that said, we're damn glad to have him..
