Reagan invented the Obama phone... actually granted amnesty to illegals with 0 improvement in border security, did jack shite about the Russians other than make us feel good. True master of propaganda he was, worthless in actual substance. Did tons of underhanded shady shite that is still paid for in american lives today. What a g.d. peach he was to have for 8 years. I abhor that a strong contingency of my party clings to this over hyped blowhard.

I was about 5 months out when Reagan left office, thus I have zero memory of his time in office. What I know is my parents love of the man. Not because of his politics, but because he made them love America again as my mother always puts it. You can disagree with his policy decisions but that's got some value as a leader.
It's why (well along with the whole assassination thing) I believe people look back at Kennedy so fondly. He could communicate and inspire. It's why people still like Bill Clinton, communicator. Partisan bickering aside, the ability to inspire and communicate is what makes a President great. If Reagan could at least do that, he's better than the Presidents I actually remember.
It's odd to type a defense of the Republican superman, but I feel it needed.

I grew up in the 80's, though I didn't really pay attention to politics. No question Reagan instilled national pride that was lacking after Vietnam and the 70's economy. And I used to be a huge Reagan fan. But as I got older and actually looked at his presidency, most of that national pride was built on propaganda.
I'll also give him credit for destroying true liberalism in America. He forced the liberal Democrats to compromise, and in the process they compromised their core values and turned into moderates and shills for the big money interests.
He was an effective leader, but a lot of the stuff that happened under his watch, we're still paying for today.

Who on here actually was alive and experienced the 1980's (and was old enough to remember those years), and the re-birth of the USA after the national embarrassment that was the 1970's?

In regards to Russia, all Reagan really did was outspend them militarily. Russia was well on its way to its demise when he took office, and he just accelerated the inevitable by invoking fear in US citizens to justify the out of control defense spending.
Yes, I was 6 when he took office and 14 when he left office. And I remember well, and participated in, all rah-rah U-S-A shite. But I could look back on it now and see it was mostly propaganda. Good for him though. He re-built national pride, and ran up the debt to do that.

Reagan was the right man at the right time. This country needed a leader after Nixon, Carter and Ford, and Reagan stepped up.

Again-this is how I know you know not of what you speak. I think you and Ehole hit all of the ill informed talking points well today, but let's review:
1. Blame Obama Phone on Reagan. At the time, border security was not the concern, but stemming the flow was. It didn't work-but go ahead and blame nearly 30 years of hindsight on Reagan.)
3. Blame national debt on Reagan. (Guess what-Clinton's budget surplus was in-part due to Reagan's economic policies. He used the debt as a tool to spur the economy from the top down by encouraging capital improvements, and it worked. Too bad the current administration doesn't know how to do this.)
4. Say Russia would have collapsed any way. (1. It's the Soviet Union/USSR-not just Russia. 2. If you think outspending the Soviet Union militarily was the sole reason and influence that the USA had on the collapse of the Soviet Union, then you are either, A. completely and utterly misinformed, B. stupid, or C. say things that your handlers tell you to say, or a combination of the three.)

Didn't really do that either. The debt he left when he left office was mostly attributed to the massive increase in defense spending during his term. I don't really blame him for that as Congress signed off on all of it. That was just the legacy of him "taking down" the USSR.

Didn't say it was the sole reason, I said that it was mostly how he accomplished it. As with every geopolitical issue, there are many factors that go into the success or failure of it. Reagan was successful for ending the USSR, and it was mainly accomplished by ratcheting up the Cold War fear to justify massive defense spending increases. Spending the USSR couldn't keep up with. Sure there were other factors that contributed to it, but that was his underlying strategy.

Reagan stimulated the economy by growing gov't debt.
