He always struck me as having better character than many of the punks in college football these days.
How does him breaking an archaic rule, that isn't even a crime, make him have less character or a college football punk?

quote:The one thing that Gurley and those punks have in common is that they know they are breaking the rules but don't care. The difference is the particular rule they are breaking. Gurley isn't beating up girls, stealing crab legs, raping coeds, or getting busted for being high, but he broke rules that he knew he shouldn't have broken. His actions don't show good character, IMO.

ETA:
I agree that the rule is stupid, but breaking (repeatedly) after knowing it was wrong it still shows poor character.

If it was any other rule, I could follow you and agree with you. But if you're Gurley, and someone offers you $x to just simply write your name, and you're not breaking any laws, and you know hundreds of other guys have easily gotten away with doing the same thing in the past, why should he or how was he supposed to say no?

But rules are rules. If you don't agree with them, try to get them changed. But as long as they exist, you have to abide by them or risk the penalties that may come from getting caught.
As far as character is concerned, he should have done the right thing regardless of the temptation, even if the rule was "stupid". He may have done what just about any other kid his age would do, but it wasn't the right thing. I am personally disappointed in him, since I perceived him to be better than that. I was wrong.

Doesn't matter if we agree with the NCAA or not. If you want to play in their sandbox, you play by their rules. Pretty much like everywhere else in life. You cut corners, eventually you get straightened.

Cmon now. We know he messed up, but once a dawg always a dawg?!
I hope you don't say that about Nick Marshall, Crowell, Patrick Reed, etc...

I wonder if we could put pressure on Allen and the other people who apparently paid Gurley (there seem to be more) under threat of lawsuit, to roll on Winston and other players at other schools. Vindictive I know, but it just sucks that they get away with it.

So only certain rules are supposed to be followed?

Some rules are more ethical than others

When I do 85 in a 70, does that make me a bad person?

You people sound ridiculous in this thread.....
Claiming to magically know Gurley's motives for this. Claiming it's all for his family etc. Painting him as a "victim".
Gurley is a guaranteed millionaire. Whether he gets to the nfl or whether he gets injured and cashes in on the insurance policy UGA bought for him.
Yet he couldn't wait a few months for that? He had to frick his team over for some pocket change?
Thanks Todd! I hope the tattoo or the retard-lookin flat-bill you bought with your autograph money was worth pissing away a Heisman and a chance to become a UGA Legend!
Moron.

A lot of people do it ... only difference is, Gurley probably didn't do it the "right" way, and he got busted for it. Or, he did it on the wrong team. One that doesn't like to sweep it under the rug.

Yep. Acting surprised a 20 year old made a mistake. A mistake that didn't even break a law.

I'm merely speculating, just like everyone who's claiming he lied, etc.

I'm sorry if that's how my posts come off. He's not a victim. He made a mistake.

We have been lucky that Chubb hasn't gotten more banged up than his thumb. If he goes down, we have no serious running game. Gurley is a beast and a game-changer. His actions may potentially hurt this team, so his "mistake" shouldn't be taken lightly, especially since he's apparently been doing it for a long time now.

Once again, you can't have it one way and not another. How long has the rule been on the books? He did it, knew he was doing it, WAS WARNED, got caught. Period.

Agreed. He deserved the punishment he got. I'm fully on board there.
What I do not agree with, however, is the statements that he slighted his teammates, coaches, university, or fans because of his poor decision. I'm not in the "FU Gurley, I never want anything to do with you" crew.
