For those of you who don't know, when Charles McClendon retired following the 1979 season, LSU hired a young, up and coming coach from North Carolina State named Bo Rein. Hired at the age of 30, he had turned the Wolfpack around in short order and was considered the hot "it" coach of the moment. Tragically, Bo was killed in a plane crash just a month after accepting the LSU job. His story has always been one of the great "what if" questions in LSU football history and I think will make a great 30 for 30.

Nice tribute to his memory by having his wife and daughter recognized on the field last night. You could see the emotion in their faces.

That sounds cool. What do you think the 30 for 30 voice narrarator will say in the trailer after he says - What if I Told You...

I'm surprised they haven't done one on Joe Delaney.

Seems like that story would be worthy of one.

Same type accident that killed Payne Stewart. Gradual decompression of the cabin. Plane was in route to Baton Rouge, it ended up in the Atlantic ocean.

Wish they had been introduced before the game instead of during a timeout. I think the reception would have been even louder.

That is what I was thinking when I read the OP. Technically, it was a plane crash but long after the pilot and Rein had died due the lack of oxygen.

I used to live in Niles, Ohio. Bo Rein led the Niles Mckinley Red Dragons to the 1963 state championship as a quarterback.

They named their high school football stadium after him.

I think it's for the SEC network not the traditional 30/30 on ESPN

With the Taveras news last night, I got to wondering why there hasn't been a 30 for 30 on Lyman Bostock. Intriguing figure who was about to take baseball by storm and he's killed at a young age

Wow, that's exciting. I've always wanted to learn more about Rein.

LSU's program might have taken a completely different trajectory in the 1980s with him at the helm. Stovall did an admirable job but was in over his head. Arnsparger was a defensive genius but an administrator at heart who hated the ground floor of college football. And Archer was simply a bad coach who rode Hodson to success in his first two years.

Imagine if that entire time we had a single coach: Bo Rein.

LSU could have been the Miami of the 1980s.

The whole city was in shock. I woke up and heard it on the radio before school. Very, very sad. My Dad was a pilot so he explained what happened to me, I remember that.

The circumstances in his death were beyond strange. The plane carrying Bo Rein and his pilot flew over the house in Raleigh, NC where his wife and children were sleeping before crashing into the Atlantic off the coast of North Carolina.

Edit: Forgot to add this:

quote:

Out of respect, LSU paid for Rein's children's college educations at the universities of their choice.

Bo Rein
