Yeah, I've had other money issues with them as well that I'd rather not talk about. Suffice to say these issues have led to more than a few fights between me and the wife. She wants nothing to do with my family, but I'm trying to stay centered and still have a relationship. I just don't do anything with money and family now, no matter how bad things get for them.

To answer the above, no I don't think its a federal loan.

That's a good rule of thumb. Just count it as gone.

No one will screw you over money faster than family. It's a pretty sad fact. I hope your brother comes around to owning up to his debit, but chances are that you'll end up paying off that loan to save your credit.

I keep my distance from family.

Blood makes you related, loyalty makes you family.

Honestly, your wife and kid are more important than anyone else. The only one I'd go out of my way to help is my mother -- it's good that you're trying to be a good guy but I would concede this one to the wife and start cutting ties.

It's toxic when you get involved monetarily. Sorry that it turned out this way, man.

If I run out of money, still in college, I'll ask my parents but I need to be in a jam in order to ask for money.

My dad owes my mom child support (I'm 27 and he's still paying) -- so I get help every month. Most of it gets saved, though, just in case.

It's admirable, though, because I notice a lot of kids these days lie (my roommate is scamming me right now, and he doesn't know that I know, but I'm indifferent) so they can abuse their parents' generosity.

What is funny is that I have a higher credit score than either of my parents but that is due to them not knowing anything about credit when they were growing up and really screwing themselves financially before I was born and me having a good base to look to so I don't make the same dumb mistakes that they did.

And if you don't mind me asking but how is he scamming you?

Honestly, I'm completely ignorant as well regarding my credit. Living in Mexico City, it seems irrelevant at this point.

I'm paying for his "education", but I know he's asked far more than he needs to fund his habits. Usually I'd say something, but it's not too much, so I'm letting it slide for now.

Yeah I'm sure it would help, except he has 35 pounds and 4 inches on me. Also I'm 28, and kind of like to think I'm above doing that.

SDAR: Yeah I know she is right, but its a hard situation to be in. Other than the money issues, I've had not problems with any family, and we're really close. Or were.

I know this too, man. It's not easy to cut ties like that (my ex-gf and I had the exact same problem, and it caused our relationship to fail) -- a lot of times it's hard for people to even contemplate that their family is holding them back.

Hold strong, man, and just pay it yourself. Hopefully your investment comes through when he graduates and gets a good job.

Just remember who earns your love and who is given it by mere chance of birth.

Your brother straight used you, brah. You need to cut ties with him unless he starts making payments.

I was left with two options. Let my parents pay for everything (could NOT find a job circa 2011-12, you try with a highschool degree) or go in to a lot of debt.

I chose to let my parents pay for shite. I'm really grateful for it but when someone tells me I scammed them or I'm taking advantage it takes away from them not me....they aren't stupid and I'm lucky they could afford to help me out.
