For some reason this makes me think of ROWK after your analogy

I'm surprised everyone seems confident that the NCAA will reinstate Gurley for Florida. Possible, but not a given, IMO.

UGA has been working with the NCAA throughout this deal. If UGA wasn't confident he'd be reinstated, they wouldn't have applied.

Hey buzzkill. Actually was thinking the same- but the NCAA would be be in-fricking-sane to extend his suspension. Georgia followed "their" rules at a time when many programs are saying kindly "frick Off". If they punish him further they're only hurting their image further whilst expediting their own demise.

I considered that, but still not sure. Maybe they did what everyone has been demanding, and pushed the envelope to get him reinstated early.
Maybe there's some insider info behind the optimism, I wouldn't know about that kind of stuff. But I do remember weeks of speculation that AJ Green would return before he actually got approval.

Hey buzzkill.
I understand the pressure to think optimistically among fans, but it doesn't change the facts. UGA applied, and that's good because it means we have some rationale for a two week punishment. However, I never adhered to the idea that UGA was being more strict than the NCAA required. I think UGA will shoot for the earliest possible date, but I'm less certain that the NCAA will go along. Whether I'm wrong or right, it's not out of the question.

AJ was the case that set the standard, He got $!,000 for his autographed jersey and the NCAA decided that was worth 4 games. They then set the sliding scale based on $$.

If I remember correctly, those numbers were in place prior to AJ.

I don't think the lawyer comes out and speaks if they aren't getting him off...plus, there were a lot of "thank you's" in the press release...
JMHO - again, the NCAA is fricked up

If UGA wasn't positive that the NCAA would approve, they would not have submitted today. There are 10 days before our next game, and the NCAA supposedly responds to these requests in 24-48 hours. If UGA wasn't sure, we'd wait...submit next week.

Actually you are correct. It was the Georgia players selling SEC rings that set the standard, I believe.

it will definitely be tough but TG has done the impossible before and he still leads the SEC in yards.

wdhalgren...i always read your posts, as they are normally sensible and intelligent. i understand your concerns completely...what gives me a strong sense of optimism (which admittedly could be misguided) is that with all of the terribleness exhibited by other programs, I believe it would be a huge P/R gaff by the NCAA to then get tough with Georgia.
Another poster alluded to this...hammering the one school that was honest in this charade might send the wrong message: "keep cheating because there is little upside to honesty".

I hope we are not underestimating the perversity of the NCAA.

You think the NCAA wants honesty? Everything I've ever seen indicates that the NCAA wants hidden corruption.

24-48 hours? 56 hrs 30 min and counting if my math is correct based on 8 am 10/22.

48 could still be right. The original announcement was that UGA was "planning to seek reinstatement later today".
Who knows?
