Q&A with Coach Harbaugh: LINK

Next week would be the end of the sixth week, so RB Marcus Lattimore or some of the guys on the lists could start practicing. What's the update on Marcus Lattimore? Do you envision him practicing sooner than later? Where is he in his progression?

"He's done very well. The way we're thinking about it is, he'd be eligible after the sixth week, he could have a week of practice and then we have a bye and then he'd have another week of practice. But the other option is to wait until after we come back from the bye and then have a 21-day period that is very similar to a training camp type of experience for Marcus. That's the direction we'd like to go because I think it's the best for Marcus. He hasn't played football in a year-and-a-half and if we can simulate a good, three-week training camp period and then activate after that and turn him loose. But giving him the best possible scenario to help the football team and for him to be at his best. Right now that seems wise. The other, as you mentioned before, you start him for a week and then now he's not doing anything for a week and then he's doing something for the week, kind of gives you that (start-stop-start) kind of feeling."

So you feel good about where he is physically and everything checks out, everything's been fine, no setbacks or anything?

"Correct."

So, that bye week would count as one of those three weeks?

"Yes. It's a 21-day window where the bye would count in his days. Good plan you think?"

Assuming he checks out and goes through those three weeks, or however long it is, fine, he'll be on the 53-man this year? Is that accurate, safe to say at this point?

"That's the hope. That's the plan."

About time. It has been about 2 years since he has played a game of football. If he isn't ready now..

Hopefully he'll kill it out there. I know SF has a lot of RB depth, so fighting to be Gore's heir apparent won't be easy.

The 3 RB's are Gore, Hyde and Lattimore. SF got rid of LaMichael James, he had a $641K base salary this season, which if really expensive for a 3rd string RB. They are waiting for Lattimore to emerge and see if he's better than Hyde. Hyde is sitting pretty until after 2015 though, he got his first 2 years guaranteed, and even if they cut him after this season, he would still be owed over $1M.

I don't think SF is going to resign Gore, he's awesome but just old for a NFL RB. he would have to take a drastic pay cut, and I think they are hoping Hyde/Lattimore are the future.

I really really hope Marcus is ready. I'm sure he's been working hard ... I just hope he's mentally ready and that he suffers no more catastrophic injuries.

Physically, he's had 2 years of therapy to get ready for his next game. Those knees are as strong as they're going to be going forward. He's going to have to take some hits to the leg in practice from Patrick Willis in order to be mentally ready for this. If they bring him back for Wk 9 against STL, that will be a tough coming out party. STL does a great job defending the run, but the rest of what they do is meh (sorry Cayce, but you know this.)

Lattimore will be an active player for the first time in his career for the 49ers next week

Marcus Lattimore is close to realizing a dream few thought was possible.

The former South Carolina running back, who endured one of the most gruesome in-game injuries we've ever seen on a football field back in 2012, will hit the practice field as an active participant for the first time in his career once the San Francisco 49ers return from the bye week.

Lattimore is down five pounds from his days as a Gamecock and says he feels quicker than ever. He'll remain at the team's facility in Santa Clara throughout the bye week to get ready for his debut.

"I want to put together consistently good days of practice so they trust me to go out there and play. That's the biggest thing," he said.

I'm really excited for him, can't wait to see him in games in a few weeks.

Me, too. Can't wait to see him back out there doing his thing. He deserves nothing but the best.

Lattimore is the man! I'm definitely pulling for him to get a good chunk of playing time, he certainly has a lot he wants to prove!

You're right ... I think he's that kind of player/person that transcends all the rivalry stuff. With the exception of Clemson fans, who still seem to hate him for choosing us over them.

Players/people like Lattie only come-along once in a blue moon.

It really does. Latti's injury was the first time I can remember being misty eyed over an opponent's injury. It bothered me so much I followed his progress on SC boards and blogs hoping for positive or any bit of information I could find. I've never been so upset over an injury to another team's player but we all knew his story and how hard he worked.

I will be one of the one cheering the hardest for Lattimore to do exceed all expectations and ball out.

Kind of crazy how he could get his first playing time the day after the home game with UT. With the schedule reshuffling I can't remember what week we played the Vols 2 years ago but it's pretty close to 2 years to the day.

It is kinda eerie when you think about how close it is and how it might happen right after our game. I wonder if the timing was chosen on purpose? I know part of it is NFL policies and such but I could see how returning at this time might be important to Latti psychologically and with knee injuries, once the repair and healing is done, 90 percent of getting back out there is believing in your body.

I still have respect for the Tennessee defense that day. Amazing display of sportsmanship.

That was an amazing thing... I'd never seen anything like that before and haven't seen anything like that since. I think that tells you how much Lattimore is respected.

RB Marcus Lattimore was not at today's game and his #49ers future is in doubt. Several RBs said they didn't know where he was or status

Son of a bitch, that sucks for Marcus.
