Tommy did a lot of great things at AU, but during a week like this we never knew what kind of product he would put out on the field on Saturday.

Possibly my favorite thing about riding The Bus is knowing that heading out to Starkville, the tank is full, oil's been checked, and we've got plenty of snacks.

Yeah. No dought on what Gus brings to the table. I think he's the best coach in the country.

Great players make great coaches. I have a ton of respect for what Tubbs did at AU. I also love what Gus is doing. Personally, I think Gus is just the better offensive mind but he also has surrounded himself with great coaches and great recruiters. Tubs did too, but 10 years at one school in the SEC is about the limit I think of success.

Yes. Gus is the more innovative coach. In the big picture though, Tubs accomplished a perfect season that elevated the program to a new level in its recent history.

We could be seeing it with LSU.... this is miles 10th season.

Richt has been at UGA longer than 10, but he's way more the exception... Plus, he had some rough seasons around the 10 year mark (2009 and 10) but weathered the storm.

True, but that may be because UGa fans were more willing to stay the course thinking that he would eventually find a way to win that NC that he came so close to getting in '02 and '07. Sure enough, in '12 he had another shot and couldn't get it done, if they falter this year and finish with only 6-7 wins regular season (unlikely but certainly possible) I think they give up on him.

Meanwhile, Saban is already in uncharted territory. He hasn't had a 7-game stretch like this since the end of his first season at Bama. They'll never 'run him off' (I don't think they can really afford to, since they would have to eat his entire $32 million deal) but I could imagine them not fighting as hard to keep him if he stumbles to, say, 8-4.

Interesting factoids: when the 2015 season kicks off, Mark Richt will be the same age as Vince Dooley was at the beginning of his final season in '88...and Nick Saban will be 2 years older than Gene Stallings was when he stepped down in '96 (and only 5 years younger than Bryant when he started his final season).

I'd wish we quit talking about Tuberville. He was an above average coach that had 1 great year, 1 very good year, and a bunch of good to mediocre years.

This all occurred when Mike Shula, Houston Nutt, Ed Orgeron, & Sly Croom roamed the sidelines in the west.

Agree. The SEC was at a point where he coul have built a dynasty, and we have one SEC title from it.

Funny you say that. There is not much I like about TT, but I figured I would throw him a bone to open the post to avoid the backlash.

Excuses, preseason games, Nallsminger, uneven play, duck hunting, etc etc. There, I said it. For every 02 Bama there was an 03 Ga Tech.

This. As you put it in your OP, you never knew how a Tubs-coached AU team was likely to respond to a game like the one upcoming. In fact, if he were still our HC I'd imagine we'd have lost to LSU last week, come in to Starkville as prohibitive underdogs, and walked out with the win. And still ended up finishing 5-3 SEC and 3rd place in the West.

Perfect synopsis of Tubs tenure at Auburn.
