Were thinking of getting one for the cousin as she is in 2nd grade.
What would be a decent one to get her?
Also I'm looking to get one for myself as I just want one to be cool.

Same reason as I want one. My Nokia isn't impressing women anymore, no matter how many times I drop it to show off its durability.

No we aren't. But she is like a daughter to us, plus her parents are economically challenged.

I don't know what a 2nd grade would need a tablet for but for you personally I recommend the Microsoft surface Pro 3. Functionality wise, It's practically a laptop

Not to be contrary, but I would not get a 2nd grader a surface. My 3rd grader can barely do windows 7 nonetheless windows 8.
I honestly think that ipad is the best tablet format. I hate Apple and Apple users but it's the best form factor and OS on a tablet.
You can get a mini for a fair price and its a good size for somebody that age.

Samsung Galaxy Note FTW, maybe a little much for a 2nd grader though.

much depends on budget and operating system.
Ipad remains the definitive tablet, but if considering an android tablet, I strongly recommend a lenovo Yoga 8 or 10 inch tablet. Very good. I own both.
Samsungs are also extremely good. Again budget drives this answer.

My daughter is in 2nd grade, and I can barely get the iPad Mini out of her hands some days. There are TONS of great educational apps for it.

iPad is good. Kindle Fire HD is good as well and has a lot of apps for it. You do have to sideload some things on it, though, which is probably beyond a 2nd grader.
It also has a "Freetime" parental control built in that allows you to limit the content and apps they can use.

I've had mine for a coupe of months now and it has replaced every other device I have (including desktop). I got the docking station for it so even use it at work just like a desktop.

our 4 year old and 6 year old grandsons regularly use an old Ipad 1 that we have around. They watch movies and play games etc on it.
Nice thing about Netflix is you can set up icon based user profiles where the kids can only pick age appropriate movies etc. Only runs iOS 5, but thats still a very good OS for what we use it for.
Wife and I have other devices.
Have you thought about ebay for an older Ipad? still extremely usable for a young kid.

I'm a big fan of my Asus but it's a bit of coin for a gift for a kid.
