Depends on the conquering empire of that region. Through the atheist Constantine and the Roman Empire, much of Europe was conquered under the Christian religion. In the Middle East and North Africa Islam became the religion of choice as that was the conquering religion and it held off the invading Christian armies for centuries.


Before these 2 powerful political spheres of influence there were smaller religions that pre date both of these ideas. Most of these were polytheists and were eventually replaced by monotheists since an all powerful God seems even more hip. Eventually the majority of Europe and North America will be atheist along with China and Russia as ideas spread across the internet and people are exposed to more intelligent, logical thought. No longer simply just believing whatever their parents believed who simply believed what their parents believed never questioning or learning why.

So Atheism then.
