Syracuse, N.Y. — It'll be 12 years ago this very weekend that I wrote the only column in my career that drew responses from all seven continents … including, yes, Antarctica.
And to this day, hand to God, I still receive periodic correspondence from Auburn football followers, updating me on their Tigers while offering dinner invitations and/or lodging and/or rounds of golf when next I return to eastern Alabama.
In these next few weeks, the Syracuse University Orange will play host to the two most intriguing teams on its 2014 home schedule — Louisville on Oct. 3 and defending national champion Florida State on Oct. 11.
And so, with those Cardinals and Seminoles in mind, I've been thinking again how the Carrier Dome might feel if it could become a kind of northern-based Jordan-Hare Stadium, the college football cathedral I visited when SU played in it (and lost in triple-overtime) on Sept. 28, 2002.
With those thoughts in my head, I find myself closing my eyes and re-imagining an experience I'll not soon forget, an experience I shared when I wrote the following column that was inspired 12 years ago this very weekend …

I will never forget that article. Remembered it as soon as I saw the title.
Another I won't ever forget is the one by the Cali writer after last years IB.

Me too. I think Caddy had like 40 carries that game.

And while we are talking classic articles, my personal all time favorite from the day I nearly got trampled to death after getting separated from my dad and grandad as a little kid in a mob barely holding on to the edge of sanity. Seriously was not safe and scared me to tears as a little kid.

Listen, down there in eastern Alabama they pass out full-color, high-gloss, 22-by-17-inch, two-sided, fold-out pamphlets titled, "The 2002 Guide To Game Day At Auburn University." And on Page 2 of each can be found the announcement that nobody is allowed to begin tailgating until 4 p.m. the day before the game.
This was my favorite part of the article. I legit

No, few years earlier. Think I was in about 4th or 5th grade for that game. The 83 in my username is just to pay respect to the true 1983 national champion.

okay, I know I am old. Graduated in 83 (5 year plan). Pretty sure near the end of my time at AU they started a new policy that no RV's could park on campus until Thursday. I remember some hard core fans back in the day......amazing considering the product that Barfield put on the field back then.

I think there's a difference between RV parking and staking out campus areas for tailgating.

I do not remember anyone staking out tailgate spaces back in my day but the RV's were prevalent. My best game memory is leaving a game with two empty racks that the vendors used to carry cokes. Seems that my section was thirsty that day. Amazing I could buy two complete racks and the cokes on a gas station attendants salary. Even the student section was disgusted with my behavior that weekend. Hoping that this weekend is half as fun as that game was. I am bringing the same date but she will take my wallet if I try that shite again.
