Like most of you, I'm starting to get scared about Mason. I dont want to stay loyal to the guy if it costs us another conference loss. After rewatching his game tape at Tech, his arm strength back then was fine. He made several really impressive throws on time to the far hash in that game. His arm is either tired or he's playing nervous. Watch the tape and see for yourself.

I don't pretend to be a QB expert but Mason seems like he is looping/putting too much arc on too many of his passes. Mason doesn't appear to have a particularly strong natural throwing arm so he should be focused on his mechanics and step into every throw to be more effective.

I don't get it either. I never thought about his arm strength last year..at all. This year his passes seem soft and without zip. They sort of float around. I'm sure the coaches would recognizes this as well...but it is a head scratcher.

He did the same thing last year that he does this year. Like someone posted the other day, Mason stated that he always knows where the ball is going before he even throws it. So if you look at the tech or UK film you can see him release the ball well before the receiver even makes his break in his route due to his arm strength. Now DB's are starting to pick up on it and they know how many screens and drags we run. We just need to throw deep a little. Even if it doesn't work, it will still make guys respect the pass a little bit more.

Mason throws nothing down field! It is just screen passes and out passes. Even getting Mitchell and JSW back doesn't he can get it to them.

That was my impression too, as I said in this thread after the Clemson game:

"4) Footwork gets jiggy at the slightest sign of pressure. One reason for the weak throws is that HM doesn't keep his feet under him unless he has an absolutely clear backfield. Mason's arm is not strong enough to throw without good mechanics. He really needs his lower body to be effective. "

He definitely did the same thing last year. It was one of my biggest concerns coming into the season. Hopefully all 3 receivers coming back will help spread out the defense a little bit and make the shorter throws a little bit easier for him.

Yea, everyone says well you get JSW, Rumph and Mitchell back next week. Well what good are deep threat receivers when the QB does not have the arm strength to go downfield. If Bobo and Richt stick with him and he causes another conference loss or two then things could get right stinky fast with the fan base. My cousin is a HS coach at some school near Athens and he got to watch a closed practice and I admit he did warn me this. He said "Mason does not have good arm strength, Murray had a much stronger arm, but he knows the playbook and coaches are worried that Ramsey or Bautu do not know how to check down defenses well enough yet". Whichever QB gets the nod for next year needs to get some quality reps now. IfRamsey looks like Stafford like some have said then he needs reps. Bring him in to sling the deep route!

I'm still in support of sticking with Mason for now, but I don't think the playbook should be an issue for not giving someone else a shot.

A lot of teams start true Freshmen who haven't mastered their entire playbooks, but the OCs tailor plays for them that they can execute effectively. Some of these QBs live and breathe in pass-heavy offenses, too.

We have a strong running game, so we just need someone to know some high-percentage pass plays and then hand the ball off every other snap.

I've wanted to stick with him pretty adamantly all season but after yesterday's performance I have gotten a lot closer to having a change of heart.

If worse comes to worse. Bobo could simplify the playbook for Bauta or Ramsey and rely on the run with the play action. I feel like we've lost the play action threat and that's been a huge factor since Richt arrived in 01. Remember Greene ran the play action like a fricking boss! That makes DC's pee in the pants a little with the running backs and wideouts on our roster!

The OP is 100% right. There is something very wrong. Last year Mason's arm was at least average. This year every receiver could take a coffee break while the ball is in the air.

Ramsey has a strong arm - but he can be a little wild though.

Who do we have coming in next year as a QB freshman? MR seems to like to take a freshman and develop him (Green, Stafford, Murray).

Something is deftinetly wrong with his arm. I saw a little bit of it last year but not anything like I saw yesterday and the usc game. There was a play when we rolled him out to the left and he had a WR open breaking out but u could tell he didn't trust his arm and he took a sack. The way I see it Andrews can set up protections from center spot. Let Ramsey hand it off and at least throw the screens and occasional long ball. That know the playbook argument is crap. Both those guys are capable of getting the job done
