Lucky says Kirby and Lance were "instrumental" in Alabama hiring Lane

I get Lance supporting the hire but I find it interesting that Kirby went out on a limb for Lane. They’ve never been on the same staff.
Regardless, kudos to the two of them for vouching for him.

Maybe Kirby knew that defense would need some adjusting time so having an offense in overdrive would be good relief.

Im assuming it had a lot to do with Crompton and that game.

That 2009 game is a blessing in disguise.
What Kiffin did with a putrid offense he inherited may be more impressive than what he's doing now. Of course, he will never get credit from Vols or other haters. But he's starting to make a lot of fools out of the offseason naysayers.

My funny Lane Kiffin story: I was at the NSD REC event in the North Zone earlier this year and each of the coaches were introduced. When it was Kiffin's turn to speak, the applause was deafening. Kiffin cooly said, "When I was here in '09 I didn't receive quite the same ovation." He continued to talk about what an honor it was to be in Tuscaloosa, to have a chance to work w/ Saban, etc. Finally, when he began discussing the recruits that had signed earlier in the day, he told a funny tale. Apparently, Kiffin and Smart's offices are close together and when Kiffin received the news (via ESPN or some other outlet) that Bama had indeed landed a major defensive recruit (I think Rashaan Evans) he immediately sprinted to Kirby's office for the "high-five" and "atta boy". He said, "Coach, we got Evans! Man, that's what I'm talking about!" to which Smart slyly replied, "Yeah, I've known that for two weeks bro."
Kiffin was hilarious in telling this story

Pretty sure that story was about Rashaan Evans.
Liner was in the 2013 class.

Bottom line- If Alabama fans can learn to love Kiffin then his next head coaching job is well within a three year window.

I really think he can be a great head coach. I think we all that the only reason he had some of the past coaching jobs (considering his lack of accomplishments at the time) was simply because of his father. He wasn't ready at all to be the head coach of a huge school like TN. He has shown that he can lead an amazing offense at USC and turn a terrible offense into an an above average one at TN. We all can see what he has done here at Alabama...
I think that he came here to set himself up for the future. He clearly wasn't ready for a TN type job with such expectations. I think he is really here to learn under Nick Saban and see how to be a successful head coach. After a few more years and learning I am 100% that he is going to want to be a head coach again. Hopefully with a few more years of experience and learning from the best and learning from his past experiences he will be ready for it.
Hearing the players talk about him they all love him. He is great at recruiting...he's got what it takes. Just needs experience.
That said I am really curious to where he will end up coaching down the road.
