The legend lives on from the Cherokee on down
Of the ol’ river they call Chattahooche
The river, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of September turn gloomy
With a load of Georgia whores twenty-six thousand accounted for
They clad all in something skimpy
That good ship and crew was a bone to be chewed
When the picks of September came early
The ship was the pride of the European side
Coming back from some hell in the Carolinas
As the big frigates go, it was better than most
With a crew and good captain well seasoned
Finishing some picks where they beat out some pricks
When they left fully loaded for Athens
Then later that night when the Chapel bell rang
Could it be what Firewind had been feelin'?
The wind in the wires made a tattle-tale sound
When the waves broke over the railing
And every man knew, as DGD did too
'Twas the Crow of September come stealin'
The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait
When the monkeys of September came slashin'
When afternoon came it was Dallas’s gang
In the face of a hurricane Firewind
When suppertime came, Alapaha came on deck
Sayin' "Fellas, picks too rough to keep ya"
At seven PM a main hatchway caved in
IT Dawg said, "Fellas, it's been good, so, see ya!"
DGD wired in he had water comin' in
And the good ship and crew was in peril
And later that night when his lights went out of sight
Came the wreck of the Damn Good Dawgle
Does anyone know where the love of Chris goes
When the triple option turns the minutes to hours?
The searchers all say they'd have made it through the day
If olddawg hadn’t accidentally cut the power
They might have split up or they might have capsized
They may have gotten drunk and refused water
And all that remains is the faces and the names
Of the wives and the sons and the daughters
Lake Lanier rolls, Oconee sings
In the rooms of her murky-water mansion
Old Hartwell steams like a young man's dreams
The islands and bays are for sportsmen
And farther below, Lake Sinclaire
Takes in what Tennessee can send her
And the remaining boats go as the competitors all know
With the gales of September remembered
In a musty old hall in the Tate they prayed
Deep in the drafty Bulldog Cafe
The chapel bell chimed 'til it rang some-thirteen times
For each man on the Damn Good Dawgle
