Last week the odds of a second SEC team making it into the inaugural playoff was trending up. The trend perhaps took a hit this week, but only in the sense that both playoff teams probably need to come from the West now.

Notes:
-There are now 21 Power5 teams that are undefeated
-week 5 sees 2 matchups between undefeated
-7 or 8 contests with an undefeated team against significant competition.
-The SECw is 22-0 out of division
-The SECe is 12-6 out of division

BY CONFERENCE:

ACC:
Florida State is the only team in the ACC, we only knew it, now we have evidence. Is anyone likely to beat Florida State? Will Florida State make it to the playoff with one loss? no, and yes probably. [see below]

BiG10:
Just what the doctor ordered, but is the patient already dead? Indiana took in the biggest win of the weekend by shocking Missouri, but the Big 10 racked up a number of quality wins against the ACC, creating a very interesting hypothetical [see below]

Big12:
Holding serve. Most of the big12 was on bye, OU overcame a surprisingly good WVU team, and Kansas State did much more than keep it close against Auburn. Is there such a thing as a quality loss? An undefeated B12 team is almost assuredly a lock, but what about a 1 loss team? much depends on who that team is and how the committee feels about how K-State and WVU performed in their losses. Is WVU the best 2 loss team in the country?

Pac12:
The Duckhunt has begun in earnest, lowly Washington State was very competitive with Oregon at home. Oregon's schedule is favorable, particularly in terms of home/away, but there are plenty of teams that can beat the team Oregon fielded in Pullman. Excellent thursday football continues this week with UCLA vs ASU, one of two undefeated matchups this week. Winner is on the fastrack to PACCG. Still no reason to see Pac12 winner get left out of Playoff, but 2 teams a much bigger stretch than for SEC

SEC:
Miss St beat LSU, and it's still unclear where exactly either team fits in the national picture. South Carolina was anything but dominant against Vandy. We are facing the grim reality that SCAR isn't very good, and how much better off the SECe would have been if Georgia had beat them. Missouri's horrible loss probably means this team will not compete for the SECe title. But it was nonconference, so they very much could, mathematically speaking. We will know more very soon.

Unless Arkansas mucks it up, the Juggernaut bloodbath that is week 6 in the SECw will do a great deal to sort out the West's playoff contenders.

Mathematically speaking, every single team in the SECw still controls it's playoff destiny.

Let's get Hypothetical: 5 questions

Kansas St wins out. Auburn drops one game to the SECw Champ: who gets in?
Georgia and South Carolina win out, Does SECCG winner and Georgia go?
What if SCAR wins the CG against unbeaten A&M [or insert other]. SECCG loser or Georgia?
12-1 FLAST or 12-1 MICHST?
SECCG winner [from the east] or 1 loss team from SECw: Pick ONE.

False, unless you're implying the SECw sends two teams to the playoffs. Arkansas and LSU no longer control their own destiny.

Too many variables but probably

quote:

Let's get Hypothetical: 5 questions Kansas St wins out.

Auburn drops one game to the SECw Champ: who gets in?

[Unfortunately, probably KState as Big XII Champ]

Georgia and South Carolina win out, Does SECCG winner and Georgia go?

[No, Georgia would not go unless a lot of weird stuff happened]

What if SCAR wins the CG against unbeaten A&M [or insert other]. SECCG loser or Georgia?

[Neither would likely go, but A&M would go over Georgia in this scenario]

12-1 FLAST or 12-1 MICHST?

[I would pick MSU, but this would be a very close call. Would depend on who FSU lost too.]

SECCG winner [from the east] or 1 loss team from SECw: Pick ONE.

[If the SECCG winner from the East only has one loss, then it would be them over the 1 loss team from the SECW]

ACC

*Florida State 11-2
Louisville 10-2

B1G

Michigan State 12-1

Big 12

Oklahoma 11-1
Baylor 11-1
*Kansas State 10-2

PAC 12

Oregon 12-1
*Arizona State 12-1

Notre Dame 11-1

SEC

*SEC West #1 12-1
SEC West #2 11-1
SEC East #1 11-2
SEC East #2 11-1

Florida state can't win the conference if Louisville finishes with one loss, that would mean Lousiville beat FSU

I can eliminate Louisville, Baylor, K-State, Arizona St, and both SECe teams (even if you're saying they beat the other team you listed from their conference.)

That leaves FSU, OU, MSU, ND, Oregon, SECwx2

based on stupid preseason rankings that would be FSU, OU, SECw1, and Oregon.

I would drop FSU for SECw#2 or ND, but good god thats horrible.

I don't think a second team will get in and really don't care if they do.

I am cool with our conference's best taking down the other 3 representatives.

I like this thread popping up each week.

Will be crazy if some of these scenarios go down.

I think your hypo would result in these four teams:

Mich State
Arizona State
Notre Dame
SEC Champ
