What Vandy team was that last night?

Where was the total incompetence we have seen all year? We used 2 QBs and both looked serviceable at worst. Mistakes were kept to an acceptable level. We were able to throw the ball with some effectiveness. KO returns were the best effort (not just that we scored) we've had in years. Sadly, squib kicks seem to be an Achilles heel, even with the caveat Fry got some crazy bounces. The defense was...well, bipolar. It was not terrible though.

Best of all, there were no major coaching gaffs. The pick 6 play call was a bit aggressive. That 2 minute drill in general seemed clumsy, but we did have a backup true freshman QB in so not unexpected or damning. I would have gone for it when we took the 20 something yard fg in 4th, but that's just a debate not a mistake so much. The play calling was much better offensively.

I'm not happy we lost. It was frustrating from a result standpoint. From a development perspective, that might be the most improvement from week to week for a Vandy team. We scraped by a 120+ ranked team then competed fiercely with a top 15 team (even if they weren't quite at their best).

It was better in a lot of ways, but I didn't understand the play-calling in two instances: I wish they would utilize the wildcat on 3rd & goal from the 2, and I don't understand why they weren't throwing the ball downfield instead of out wide on that pick 6 before halftime, given the circumstances.

Puzzled me as well

Not sure what this week brings but a bad win followed by a respectable loss is an upswing for now.

Me too, but that's not really an egregious error. I think it would be very effective considering how our line did against their line. The extra blocker would help, and direct snap gets the ball to back quicker. However, keeping the QB on allows for PA or even just a quick slant. Consider using a wildcat with Kentera (high school QB) or Grady so that we could still use some pass plays?

Not sure either. That curl route across the field is a very difficult throw. I didn't mean to say the playcalling was perfect. It just was not ridiculously bad and worthy of a thousand facepalms with some moments worthy of praise.

Marked improvement in all 3 phases of the game. Most importantly there seemed to be a fire and energy that had been sorely missing up until then. Not a single penalty on offense. No false starts, no illegal formations, no holding. Definitely something to build on.

It was a showing that really makes me think that these guys are maybe actually getting it. The players and the coaches. The offense was worlds better than at any point this year, even after losing the QB that had it working. It wasn't long ago when Sims got pulled for fumbling against Temple, which shows the entire ST needs some hands work, but the blocking was beautiful. The defense had some holes still, yet showed much better as well. Vince Taylor was eating the SCAR interior for supper. All of a sudden, I feel like with continued effort like that that this team is going to win some more games this year.

To sum it up, that was the first time I got excited all year. I was exuberant for these young guys making plays and showing out for Vandy. I was cursing refs for their calls and my blood was flowing hot, giving me that warm feeling I felt for 3 straight years that was ripped away from me at the beginning of the season. I missed it.
