Thoughts on the Defense?

I know we were just playing Troy yesterday but I did think there were some things we could take away from the game.
1. Our CBs and safeties have to figure out how to stop that route in between 15 to 20 yards down the sideline. I'm not exactly sure if the CBs are supposed to drop more, but it seems to me that the safeties are always just a step or two slow trying to get over to that route and good QBs can exploit that if we don't get a good pass rush.
2. Our defense is so much better at creating turnovers than last year. The players actively try to strip the ball when they have that opportunity and when their heads aren't turned we generally make much better plays on the ball.
Hopefully our defense can keep improving and the shutout will be able to provide them with some confidence. I know there is still a very long way to go, but I think there are more positives than negative things to take away from this game.

We either play zone and threaten to castrate any player that bites on the first move and leaves his zone, or play man with a free safety roaming deep and blitz on every play.
I go with man and blitz.

Open areas and transition points are an issue with any zone defense. The problem is ownership and reaction time in the zones. Smart offenses are obviously aware of the transition points and intentionally pulled receivers through one part of the zone in order to create more open space in another part of the zone. In the end it boils down to man to man coverage with defenders covering whoever enters their zone. Good defenses make the transitions smoothly as a receiver moves through the zones.
The best defenses get stud DB's who can play man to man coverage right up in the receivers face while the safeties provide support as needed up the middle and against the best receivers.
Our main problem is not playing tight enough on receivers. No doubt Pruitt recognizes this but doesn't have enough confidence in our young DB's to hang with the better receivers. Solution: Experience and we need to recruit better in the Secondary.

Knowns:
Interceptions are created when a db "jumps a route".
In order to "jump a route" a db must anticipate where the ball is going.
In order for a db to anticipate where the ball is going, he's got to pay attention to his receiver, as well as other receivers, and watch the qb. Or, he can simply cover his zone.
Conclusion- More "jumped routes" resulting in interceptions are created by more zone coverages and less man.
Any interception in man coverage is the result of a shitty throw.

Or a lock-down DB who knows when to look back for the ball. It takes a perfect pass to beat tight man to man coverage and it's hard as hell to make a perfect pass on every throw. But yea, zone coverage produces more INT's by design.

Plain and simple, really: we're not as athletic in the secondary as most teams in our conference. I think we do have some guys that will step up as the season progresses (Terry and Wilkerson, mostly), but when you're starting Bowman, a walk-on, and a kid that was basically brought in on a cootieship in the secondary, there's a lack of athleticism in your secondary. The problem is that those are the guys who are aware of what's going on in the defense, and it's hard to be an effective DB if you don't have a sound grasp of the scheme, even if you have world-class talent.

The key all year will be getting pressure on the QB and protecting the secondary. Our run defense looks decent enough I guess

That part of the field is always open in cover 2. The way to prevent it from being exploited is to do a good job jamming off the line to disrupt the route and not to allow an outside release. The second way is to get pressure to disrupt the throwing lane. The third is to show cover 2 and drop out of it so the QB has to make the right read before he puts it in the soft spot. A ' lock down' CB doesn't make a goddam difference in cover 2.
Spurrier was attacking that part of our cover 2 with a slot guy which takes longer to develop, but is typically not a route that will get jammed. Lack of pass rush opened those routes.

No No No Peter god dammit that's COmPlicAtEd and our players are too dumb to understand.

That's not complicated rig.

Troy could have scored a few times had they not dropped passes or fumbled, but that is what bad teams do.
It is to bad JJ was kicked out of the game so early, it would have been nice to see how he did. It would also be nice if Malcolm Mitchell played a little DB when he returned, but I know there is 0% chance of that happening.

I think you make a great point there (your entire post is really good) and I completely agree with you about Terry. I'd love to see him get more playing time. Davis, Mauger, and Redd are all incredibly slow. Green isn't that quick and he's short. Hopefully the freshman can use that Troy game along with Vandy to develop a little bit more so we can minimize our liability in the secondary. A pass rush will definitely make our secondary look better, which we should be able to get against a deprived Tennessee offensive line, and hopefully the more the players learn of Pruitt's system, the more the athletic guys will be able to play.

Yep, I would guess that Pruitt recognizes that we need to recruit better in the Secondary.
