It's not complicated. Preseason expectations affect voters. Ole Miss has better recruits than that that MSU team had.

The real answer is: The REC made it so. They know that a loss will be coming on 10/4, so they pulled strings to at least have it be against a top 10 team

Because MSU, if in Alabama, would be Troy. Or Georgia Southern in Georgia. Or MTSU in Tennessee, etc.

Five 1-loss teams ahead of them, including two from the same conference and one from the same division.

I see no problem with where they are ranked. We have no idea who they had beaten at thatpoint...they obviously hadn't played LSU yet

Obviously the 2012 voters were vindicated in keeping state out of the top ten. They completely fell apart versus opponents with a pulse the second half of the season.

Expecting similar on the field results this season.

Took four games for MSU to crack Top 25 that year. Ole Miss started 18.

Don't worry, Sunday, Mississippi State will be ranked.
