The Tigers' defense, however, may boast even more future NFL selections with junior linebacker Kris Frost perhaps the most intriguing.

As it turns out, Frost played a critical role in helping to "freeze" Kansas State's quarterback Jake Waters and the normally run-heavy Wildcats. Entering the game, Kansas State was averaging 236 rushing yards per game. Against Frost and the Tigers, the Wildcats ran for just 40.

Auburn clearly felt that the key to slowing down the Wildcats' running attack was containing Waters in the pocket. As such, Auburn frequently moved Frost and fellow junior linebacker Cassanova McKinzy to the edges in a "Bear" front with five defenders at the line of scrimmage, effectively penning in the gutty quarterback.

While the strength to hold up on the perimeter played a key role in this game, it was the athleticism and improved awareness Frost showed that could to his stock warming with scouts.

Gutsy performance all around by the back 7. While the stats sheet won't show it, Frost and Cass played quality downs all night long

Big step up by Frost IMO. Overall I feel very good about our 'front 6.'

The NFL likes Frost's athletic ability but until last night he's struggled at LB. The position didn't come as instinct to him in earlier games and he was out of position.

Frost actually filled up the stat sheet pretty well last night... couple sacks and forced fumble.

Agree on the back seven... Played really well.

People on this board have blasted Frost all year and I have defended him. Some of you look at stat sheets as empirical evidence to a player's ability without considering the player's assignment. That's a bad habit that should be dropped.

He didn't play well against Arky. He whiffed on a lot of plays.

SJSU and KSU he played very well.

He really didn't. You guys are focusing on one play near the end zone and then using the stat sheet to back up your assumption. The coaches used Kris Frost to blitz that entire game and those blitzing packages yielded little results. That's why Kris led the team in hurries. I'm not saying he played the best game of his life but trying to say he played terrible is showing that you have no concept of what his assignment was for the game.

But I know that won't stop anyone from defending their ignorance.

No, he whiffed on multiple tackles that game. He really did not have a great game against Arky. QB hurries are nice, but don't make his performance a good one.

As I also said, he has played great since then.

We won't agree on the terms of "bad" but my ultimate point, then and now, is that he's a really good linebacker. He's probably going to turn out to be the best defensive player for us this year with Gabe playing out of position.

Doubtful, but I like the way he played yesterday. I hope he does become the best player on D. I will never hold it against him.

I went a little overboard but no one is going to convince me he didn't play well vs Arkansas. What type of assignment would have 1 of our 2 lb's not involved in stopping the run vs a team like Arkansas?

That stupid fricking blitz package we used the entire first half of the Arkansas game where we had our linebackers lined up at the LOS.

Come on guys, just join my Kris Frost circle jerk. You know that part of you wants in, and we know which part

Some teams are a much better matchup for frost's skillset... He's more comfortable against spread teams, it appears... where he's chasing the QB and playing in space... A&M last year is a good example, as well as last night.

He's not as good in the box, which is what arkansas required him to do. LSU is another one similar to LSU. Will be interesting to see if he plays better.

Well, they only ran the ball around 25 times.

Here's a quick breakdown of the first 4 possessions...

1st possession
Run to CM's side (RT off tackle) (weak side) - Frost was on the strong side
Pass - Frost almost picks it off on the deflection by Jones
Pass - Allen scrambles to CM's side (weak side) - Frost was back in coverage
Punt

2nd possession
Run to CM's side (RT sweep)
Run up the middle - Frost was sealing the RT edge of the LOS - chased him down, but whitehead made the tackle first
Run to the RT, cut back to the middle - Frost again blitzed to seal the RT side of the LOS and actually was responsible for the cutback
Run up the middle - Frost was sealing the LT edge of the LOS on the wide side
Run up the middle - AB & JG stopped it at the LOS, Frost was the next man there from the LT side
PA TD pass to Henry - Frost blitzed the RT side and hit Allen right after he threw the ball

3rd possession
Run up the middle - Frost attacks the RT side of the LOS
Deep pass - Frost drops into coverage
Pass called - Frost covers the RB to the RT side out of the backfield - Allen scrambles up the middle
Draw play - LG got a helmet on Frost on the second level
Run up the middle - Frost again seals the LT edge of the LOS
Pass - Frost blitzes the RT side - RT tackle handles him
Pass - Frost & McKinzy blitz down the middle - RB takes him down low - the pressure causes Allen to scramble to the RT and throw it OB
Punt

4th possession
PA pass - Frost covers middle of the field - pass to RT side
Run RT off tackle - Frost playing middle of the field - LG gets to second level - run stopped at the LOS by the DL
Pass - Frost blitzes off RT side
Pass - Frost covers RB
Toss to the LT side (weak side) - Frost covering strong side - play stopped after a gain of a couple
PA pass - Frost blitzed from LT side - him and another player put pressure on Allen
PA pass - TD to TE between the safeties

I'm not going thru the rest of the game, but Frost's responsibility that game were clearly to seal the edge, blitz the QB, and help in pass protection. And all this talk about Arkansas being a running team is just silly. I mean they are one, but in their first 4 possessions, they called in 12 pass plays and 10 run plays.
