What if....Rohan Davey never gets hurt and Tennessee wins?

- Chavis and UT were clearly prepared for Davey. The running QB and QB draw threw him waaay off.

- UT then is matched up against Miami in the NC. While I don't think Miami loses, it could be a much closer game than many would think at first glance. Let's look at the matchups:

1. UT had a much more balanced offense with Clausen, Stallworth, and Travis Stephens than Nebraska did. Miami struggled earlier that season with teams that had a balanced offense like BC.

2. Haynesworth/Henderson/Overstreet at DL teamed with Kevin Burnett at LB really can pose a huge dent in the Miami running game.

3. Jabari Greer and Andre Lott probably would've been the best secondary UM has faced all year.

Many could argue UT majorly underachieved in '01. I think given the motivation of the NC game, anything could've happened.

- Does this affect recruiting for UT and keep recruits coming in?

- How much does it hurt LSU to go 8-4 and go to a lower-tier bowl game. Does the 03 team have the confidence to beat UGA the next year?

What would a game in December of 01 against UT have to do with LSU's chances against UGA in September of 03?

What if Auburn didn't smoke cigars on our field in 1999 and stomp on our midfield logo before the game in 2001? Would LSU had not been motivated to win that game? Would Auburn had beaten Tennessee in Atlanta?

If LSU doesn't win the SECCG in '01 and goes through a terrible '02 (5-6 losses), do the recruits keep pouring in for SAban? Do the fans have the patience with him? Does the team have the same confidence and swagger in 03?

Tenn would win the 2001 NC

LSU would still win the 2003 NC

Saban still leaves for Dolphins

Saban still comes back to Bama and history is the same.

The better questions is what would have happened if Saban had not passed on Drew Brees (best thing he ever did for the state of Louisiana).

I've said it many times before but VOLS and Florida were the only 2 teams in the country that had the athletes to hang with Miami that year. Not saying they would beat them but they've would've easily given them much more of a game than Nebraska did.

Thinking about the 2001 VOLS still pisses me off to this day. Arguably the most talented team in our history and all we got out of it was a fricking Capitol One Bowl win.

REally? You think they beat '01 Miami? They do match up well, but I don't know...

I don't know. If UT wins another NC in '01, does LSU and UGA still out-recruit them? The 02-05 recruiting period is what weakened UT. Hiring Kiffin and Dooley is what knocked them the F out.

True. I wish Saban would've gotten Drew Brees.

I know. You guys were the only team that could match up with Miami athlete per athlete. I don't even think UF could that year.

It's like the players and coaches didn't even prepare for LSU at all. NOt talking about Mauck, but offensively as well. Took the SECCG for granted.

This is 100% spot on. Tennessee was viewed as a powerhouse machine in 2001 and with Spurrier leaving UF, we were in perfect position to have a stranglehold on the SEC. UGA was still down but had just hired Richt, Bama was in disarray, LSU was up and coming but not nearly the powerhouse they are today, Zook was obviously nothing close to Spurrier.

The loss in the SECCG couldn't have happened at a worse time for Tennessee.

It's sickening when I look at the roster we had in 2001 and NFL talent was just all over the place.

Yep. So unprepared and was still riding too high off of the Florida victory just a week earlier. I've never seen a championship caliber team look as baffled as Tennessee did that night after they knocked Davey and Toefield out of the game.

They made more stupid mistakes on both sides of the ball during that game than they had all season combined. Stephens had a crucial fumble, Stallworth fumbled late when we were driving and had a chance at retaking the lead. Greer dropped an easy INT. And we had a freaking NFL front 7, yet UT couldn't stop a QB draw that featured a guy that went on to be a dentist.

Easily the most infuriating loss I've witnessed.
