i've said this elsewhere....for sure, i'm onboard with gus malzahn as our coach, but part of me believes he's still a work in progress. there have been times, dating back to the OC days, where it almost seems like he puts wrinkles in the gameplan more as a "look everyone, see what i can do here" moment as opposed to a more legitimately sound reason. now, thanks to the athletes on the field, most of the time it has no effect on the outcome. however, that hasn't always been the case. the FSU game was one instance, taking marshall out for a play & running wildcat, which ultimately squashed a crucial drive. last night was another example....auburn seemed to finally find its rhythm & was looking to slam the door, then malzahn brings in johnson. would it have made more sense to do that earlier, when auburn was still struggling? sure. but in this case, it halted the momentum & auburn had to settle for a FG. we held on to win, but it took remarkable execution by marshall/williams in the waning moments to seal the deal.

am i overthinking, or does it seem like gus is guilty of tinkering for the sake of it? i can only hope that last night (as well as FSU) will make him realize that sometimes sticking with what's working is the best answer...

I agree 100%. Still, i would prefer that over a coach that is too predictable.

This happens a ton early in the season. It's almost like he is trying every thing his out and then trims the playbook accordingly. I do love the fact we are running slants this year. We have been eaten up by those in the past so its nice to turn the tables.

But as long as Gus is here there are going to be those wtf drives and calls. Once this offense finds its identity I think we will see less of them

Completely agree. I said that at the UT game last year. Tried to get cute with that bootleg pass deep in our own territory and it resulted in a pick 6. Thankfully UT didn't have the horses to hang with us, but against a top team like Bama or LSU, that could have been a huge play.

All great OC minds do this CSS will abandon the run to Fun and Gun when all logical reason will say not to with the best of them.

I believe the WildCat should be banned from all future Auburn play books, period. Put it in Gus' future contracts.

Also, I prefer to get the ball to start the second half, especially on the road.

Think the team, the coaches, and the fans may have underestimated KSU due to the ISU game. We came out very flat and I was surprised by that.

Yes, I coach in his just his 3rd season as a college HC (2nd season here) is still a work in progress.

i thought the play calling early was weird... thought we should've run the ball more on 2nd/3rd downs and medium to short yardage... but it got better as the game went on and we executed better.

I kind of agree. Gus committed to getting Johnson on the field in every game, but I thought the way they did that last night was stupid.

Gus isnt above a brain fart sometimes.

to be fair, we picked up a first down on that first play with JJ. they put him on the far left and ran to the other side of the field, but your point is taken. some times the play calling seems to get too cute. perhaps its to instill confidence in our offensive guys, but as practical as Gus seems to be he should just keep going with what works. we were moving well on that drive running the ball.

Agreed. With a quarterback as mobile as Marshall, you pretty much run the wildcat every play anyway.

It's been well documented that Gus has a "Gus" moment nearly every game. It's usually a complete drive or a few play calls in certain situations that make you go wtf?

People are dogging the wildcat, but the play before it picked up 18 yards.
