I was talking with another parent in my neighborhood last night and the bus topic came up. I take my kids to school because it's on my way to work and the bus picks up at 6:30 - too early for us. Her kids take the bus and she informed me that the bus also stops at an apartment complex and they segregate the apartment kids and neighborhood kids on opposite sides of the bus. I was appalled when she told me that, but she didn't think it was a big deal because "the apartment kids are mean." Not sure how long this has been in practice, but my guess is both sides were being "mean", and the meanness was instigated by the parents of both sides. She took offense to that when I said it, but she's always coddled her kids and thinks they do no wrong.

Is this normal? Segregation in 2014? I emailed the principal this morning to get some more background on it. Awaiting her reply.

I don't think the seats are assigned. They just make the neighborhood kids sent on one side, and the apartment kids on the other side. That is really fricked up to me and is sending a terrible message to the kids.

we had assigned seats on my bus when I was riding the cheese wagon back in the 90's. Granted, those were either elementary and/or middle school years and probably because a-hole kids wouldn't listen to the driver.

hmmmmm......

don't agree with separating them unless there were blatantly issues that caused it.

we had a few families that feuded (german catholic farming community) and they were asked to sit in the front of the bus and back respectively and they were both affluent whites.

if them being separated purely puts minorities on one side and whites on another, then there's an issue. if it's mixed then i just see it as causing less grief for the bus driver

only poors ride the bus. I don't see why the more poor should be separated from the other poors but i don't really care if they segregate them.

fwiw here the poor kids get bussed all around the city and they can spend hours of time on the bus. This is all thanks to stupid fed judges, their deseg rulings ended up hurting kids of all races because it is wasted time for kids to spend 3+ hours commuting to school.

The apartments are mostly Mexican, with some blacks and whites. One my daughter's best friends lives in the apartment complex.

The principal emailed me back and said it actually started several years ago after numerous complaints from parents of both sides. She said it was more a safety issue since the driver needed to focus on the road and not the kids. She said they've been working on a better solution, and welcomed my input on it. I emailed her back and said with the way parents are today, it's doubtful there is a viable solution since they are unwilling to admit their little angels are ever in the wrong.

She has her kids on a gluten-free diet, so that'd be a safe bet. Her daughter was one of the biggest troublemakers in my daughter's class last year.

I don't have to drive all over town with a bunch of bratty kids in a bus. I would defer to the driver's judgment on this one.

Why send the email if your kids aren't affected?

Because we've been considering sending them on the bus after Christmas break and next school year.

I would not say it is normal, but then again I haven't ridden a school bus in 20+ years.

I do remember that when I was in 7th/8th grade the bus driver would make boys sits in the back half and girls in the front half, or vice-versa. Back then I thought it was odd, but looking back, given it was Atlanta Public Schools, I could imagine there had been some stuff going on to bring about that policy.

I strongly advise if you're able to have your kids avoid the bus these days to do so. Buses are absolutely shitshows. Especially given the quality of drivers hired and the lack in most district of monitors even on tougher buses.

Honestly, buses were a shitshow when I rode them over 20 years ago. One of the 2 fights I got in at school was on the bus. I have an idea what they'll be exposed to. Our district is somewhat insulated from real troublemakers(fairly affluent area) so I'm not too worried about it. The wife is a different story, but I digress...

My son goes to a different school next year which is way out of the way for the wife and I in the morning, so the bus is about the only option. I don't want him to learn it's okay to look down his nose at apartment kids(read:poors) like this parent did last night, which I'm sure she's passing on to her kids. I was the poor being looked down on when I was in school and it's a crummy feeling.
