Intentional grounding play

Here is the play...
1) He isn't outside the pocket.
2) The ball doesn't make it back to the line of scrimmage.
3) Hicks is at least 5 yards away and isn't looking when Mason throws it.
Watching the play develop, it almost looks like a busted play from the get go. All the linemen are blocking towards the left side of the line, while Hicks is the only one running towards the right (he was intended receiver). It looks almost like they were setting up the screen in the middle, but Hicks was running wide right.

Interesting. If it weren't Germans, I would say it was the correct call.

It looks like it hit the dt in the thigh. Dont see how it can be intentional grounding if it hits a defender first.Right?

The ball hit the defender. If it hadn't it would have fell at Hicks feet.
Did he intentionally throw the ball down...yes, but if it hadn't hit the defender, then there would have been a receiver in the vicinity of where the ball was thrown.

It was a failed bootleg. Defender didn't go for the fake and was right on top of Mason quickly.

Yes if the ball would of went through the defended, then yeah it could of made it to Hicks, but he almost hits the guy in the nuts, so there is no way that ball is gonna get to Hicks.
I dont even think the refs saw it hit the defender.

So what are you saying? It was a bad call. I agree.

It doesn't have to get to him. You just have to have an eligible receiver in close proximity to where the ball is thrown. That would have been the case if not for the ball hitting the defender first.

It was a failed "Naked Boot" as he had no blocker rolling out in front. RT blocks down and actually touches NO ONE. DE came untouched. Why not a reach block on that DE from Kolton Houston????? Even more risky play call.

What's your point? None of that is relevant to why it wasn't intentional grounding?

why didn't he just throw at hicks feet...might have been able to complete it as well and who knows if they could have stopped big Q or not

Surely Kolton was supposed to pick up the DE? No way they let they guy come clean by design.
Nice block by Conley.
The play would have left Hicks 1 on 1 to the stick with a head of steam. Money on Hicks.
1)I don't think they say it hit the defender
2)Mason points it out but should have raised more hell about it + he needs to sell the throw away a bit better. He wasn't expecting that DE to be there.

You've seen the video and still can't admit you are wrong.
The ball was thrown about a yard behind Hicks, clearly.

Mason could have made it look a little better and not gotten called for grounding. Didn't look like he in immediate danger of getting sacked (as in he could have thrown out of the end zone).Inexperience.

A couple of things....
First, #75 missed the block on the defender that broke up the play and almost got Mason. He makes the block and Quayvon walks in.
Second...there were like 10 guys in the box...the fullback pass was a great call.
And Mason obviously threw it into the SC guys leg....which wasn't even in the same direction as the fullback.
