I'm up late doing some laundry, so I decided to take a look at how efficient the teams are. I don't think Total Offense or Total Defense are really the best ways to look at it. Points win games, not yards. However, even points scored and points allowed don't tell the whole story.
I wanted to know just how efficient everyone was at both scoring and keeping their opponent from scoring. To do this, I decided to graph points vs time of possession.
For an offense, the more points you score per minute of possession, the more efficient your offense is.
No real surprises here. TAMU has the most efficient offense in the conference.
For a defense, the fewer points you allow per minute of possession, the more efficient you are.
TAMU at 3 is really surprising to me. I don't think this will hold, but it is certainly a nice start.

I do have to say, I disagree that TOP is the most accurate metric. I think points per play would be more appropriate, just because TOP slants in favor of HUNH offenses, but perhaps that was the point?

I think points per play is also a good way to look at it as well and no one metric gives you the entire picture.
Here is the points per play scored by each offense:
TAMU once again fares really well.
On the defensive side, we have the opponent's points per play, the lower the better:
Coming in at 4th certainly isn't bad.
Overall, I would say the team is clicking fairly well, but could certainly do better.

Since people want to label certain offenses as HUNH, let's see how that pans out. This is a look at how fast an offense moves. This is basically total plays per game vs time of possession.
The only one here that really surprises me is Mizzou. I think they are generally considered to be a faster offense than they really are.

Can you make a graph that incorporates all of the stats? Like an average points per play per minute times efficiency? Or something similar, I was just putting it in a random order

I will look at the data when I get home this evening and see if there is a logical way to combine the data. I can graph anything that I can put into a formula, it is just a matter of creating a formula that outputs useful info.

Yes, it is very frustrating to deal with some of the idiots that only look at total yards.
That certainly has some bearing on the quality of a defense and, all things equal, you want to allow the fewest yards possible because there is definitely a correlation between yards and points. However, it is not a direct relationship and in the end the points allowed is really all that matters.

Florida is HUNH now? Or is their PPM being inflated by counting the plays from the 3OT but not the TOP?

With their new OC, Kurt Roper, they are definitely running tempo now.

I think it would also be interesting to simply see points per possession. While your analysis assumes an offense that scores quickly is more efficient, I think a 10 minute scoring drive is equally, if not more efficient. Just my take.

It is efficient in a different kind of way, namely preventing your opponent from scoring without actually putting your defense under the gun. Although I know they put together one in the SC game, I doubt we see too many of those this season.
I am still at work, but will see about producing a chart for that. However, I don't think I have seen any sites with those stats and I doubt I will have the time to manually look up every teams drive charts from each game in order to figure out the numbers.

Not to be negative ned, but 2 of our 3 games are Rice and Lamar. Let's wait to thump our chests until later in the season.
