Or at least to the doorway to hell. I can't believe I've never heard of this. That's a mighty long time to be burning.. wonder how much gas that is over the yrs.

quote:

No one is really sure, when the fire in the 60-meter wide, 20-meter deep crater may go out, but it is known for certain that it was started after a drilling accident in 1971.

The ground at the site collapsed when Soviet geologists were exploring a natural gas field – one of the many reserves in the gas-rich country, which used to be a Soviet republic. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident, but fearing that poisonous gas fumes may pose a danger for the local population and animals, the geologists decided to set them on fire, thinking they will soon burn out.

The guys apparently miscalculated – and the gas is still burning, creating a surreal otherworldly scene

Did you notice the part about ground under a drill rig collapsing causing the hole?

Those workers had a bad day.

There was a special on NatGeo a week or so about this--some dude set up a skyline, scooted out to the middle of it, and then was lowered to the floor of the crater (wearing one of those fireproof, lost-in-space-looking suits). Pretty interesting stuff.

Fuuuuck that.

Underground fires are more common than you think. There is one in Pennsylvania that's been burning for like 60 years.

Those who know Magma, cannot explain, those who don't, can't understand.

If you have to ask, you're not ready to know yet. - Magorpheus.

I think it happened with the 9/11 thread a while back where Sleeping Tiger swore up and down that the firefighters saw magma at Ground Zero.

Ever since then it's developed into a little bit of a cult.

What if you're in the middle, where you know what it represents but don't know what it is?

Magma cares not for ambiguous dispositions. You know or you don't know, you cannot be agnostic with Mother Magma.

Yep.. that would be Centralia, where they had the bright idea to burn their trash/dump and caught the abandoned coal mine on fire.

There are some longer burning ones than that though...

In Germany, a coal seam in a mountain has been burning since 1688 and in Australia, there is the Burning Mountain.. burning for 6,000 years.

But, we're running out of fossil fuels because of our consumption...

eta- oh, and the Pennsylvania fires, are expected to burn for another 250 yrs.

Clearly the burning mountains are being caused by global warming. And of course, I base this on absolutely nothing.
