The law enforcement official, speaking to the AP on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation, says he had no further communication with any NFL employee and can't confirm anyone watched the video. The person said they were unauthorized to release the video but shared it unsolicited, because they wanted the NFL to have it before deciding on Rice's punishment.

I'm skeptical that anyone loses their job over this, other than maybe the anonymous law enforcement official. Sure, the NFL had seen the video. So had the team and probably the rest of the US news media, or at least they had been told exactly what it contained. News reporting is not done on a factual basis, it's done on a need to know basis. The decisions on who needs to know what, and when, are made at a very high level, and apparently this story was deemed unfit for public consumption. Then when it was leaked to some fringe blog, everyone immediately denies knowledge and act immediately to defuse the story by kicking him out of the game.

Sponsors will put the pressure on team owners to fire Goodell if he doesn't resign.

It's possible, depending on how many important enemies Mr. Goodell has. I'm just saying that he didn't decide to cover this up on his own. There was support from bigger fish than just the NFL and Ravens organizations. Otherwise, it would have gone public before now.

I agree with that, but Coke, Subway, Budweiser, etc are way too savvy not to jump on the soap-box and let everybody know how seriously they take the cause de-jour.

There is another side to consider. Many professional athletes, as well as other groups of "role models", lead a lifestyle that would not be attractive if all the facts were known to the public. Sponsors know this also, and nobody has a vested interest in removing leaders, like Mr. Goodell, who play the PR game according to established rules.

Goodell could be sacrificed in this case, but you can bet that they don't want a replacement who intends to shed light on the subject. So this will be handled very delicately lest leaders at various organizations decide that, for their own interests, honesty is the best policy.

The title of this thread had me really excited, I thought he had really stepped down or something. The day he does should be a national holiday.

I'm sure all the lynch mob finger-waggers like yourself, who are calling for some meaningless figurehead to be fired, will all boycott the nfl......and stop watching the games if he doesn't get canned, right?

shite. Give me a break......

KO is a blowhard.

The NFL is a business. If businesses fired everyone who had ever committed domestic violence the world would probably shut down. The NFL didn't beat anyone...Ray Rice did. They are in the buisness of making money first and foremost.

They knew Rice beat his wife and gave him a two game suspension. They knew Gordon smoked pot and he got a year suspension. Something is wrong with this picture and these guys are supposed to be role models.
