Why don't Bama, Arkansas play other in-state non-conf. schools?

I thought this was interesting.

quote:

Some SEC programs will barely acknowledge in-state teams from outside the conference. See Arkansas' treatment of Arkansas State or Alabama's testy relationship with UAB (or Troy and South Alabama). Neither SEC school has played an in-state opponent from outside the conference since 1944.

Alabama Howard, 1944 None
Arkansas Arkansas A&M, 1944 None

Why would UA want to support UAB when it would benefit UA for them to just cancel thier program..

Because Arkansas State would have whipped Arkansas' arse for a few years in a row now.

We don't want to help their programs get stronger. It is also a lose-lose for Bama. If you beat them by 50, no one cares. If it is close or a loss, then someone is getting teabagged or poisoned.

We play three in state teams in 14 including Lamar and we've played Texas like 118 times

If you see UAB as competition for UA then I'm not sure what to tell you

The writer's research might be off based on a reader's comment in the article, but I imagine he considers Texas a conference opponent for A&M.

Last time we started playing a little shite school across the state, they started throwing toilet paper in the trees. We don't want to contribute to pointless deforestation.

Both South Carolina and Clemson play one of Wofford, SC State, Furman, Citadel, or Coastal every year.

It could actually be based on consecutive years too. We had a period where we didn't play Texas in the 1910's while I don't think we've stopped playing Baylor

Other schools in state are not worthy of being on the same field as Bama.
This includes auburn. But Slive makes us play them.
