Van Horn is excited about the newcomers
"We've got more depth in the field than we've had in the last seven or eight years," Van Horn noted. "It's going to make for some interesting competition."
Actually there appears to be depth up and down the roster, so much of it that some of the starters from a season ago may have to fight to keep their jobs next spring. Van Horn has already addressed the competition for playing time. He wants his talented newcomers to handle it the right way.
"You're trying to beat out kids and play with other players that are two and three years older than you," Van Horn advised. "Just go out and play hard, practice hard, try to learn as much as you can. Don't worry about things you can't control right now like, am I going to start or am I going to play?"
How many of the true freshmen and JUCO transfers end up starting remains to be seen but a good number will likely play. This group appears to be too talented for mass red-shirting.
"They're very physical. Some strong kids. Some fast kids and they're definitely going to help our team in 2015," Van Horn predicted.
Practice one involved no scrimmaging but Van Horn said that will change. He's got some really promising arms coming in and he wants to test them quickly telling reporters, "We'll be throwing a lot of the new guys (in the scrimmages) and then the older guys are going to come out of the bullpen the first couple of times out. Just try to get out there and see what we have."
Looks like a lot of the boys that started or played some last year will be battling our talented freshmen class for jobs.

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas freshman outfielder Luke Bonfield will undergo surgery today to repair a broken ankle.
Bonfield suffered the injury while running the bases during a scrimmage Monday and will miss the remainder of the Razorbacks' fall practices. The Skillman, N.J. native was one of the top recruits nationally after playing his final season at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.
The surgery is expected to sideline Bonfield for about eight weeks.
"This will give him a chance to really work on his body for the next couple of months," Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn said. "We'll get him going on upper-body and then just work lower-body the best we can. Then we'll get him back into baseball stuff probably in November.
"I think the plus side for us coaches is that we've had our eyes on him for a couple of weeks during practice or skill instruction, and then he got to play in a couple of scrimmages. He hit a couple of balls out of the park, in our mind, during a scrimmage last Saturday indoors. He'll be right there battling to play. He plays hard and he loves it. We got to see a lot about his makeup."
Bonfield batted .379 with 3 home runs and 19 RBIs in 24 games as a senior. He was rated as one of the top 100 prospects for the MLB Draft by Baseball America, but wasn't drafted by the New York Mets until the 21st round because of sign-ability concerns.
Bonfield is one of several highly-recruited freshmen on Arkansas' campus this fall. The Razorbacks had the nation's second-best signing class, according to Perfect Game USA.

The Razorbacks will open the season Feb. 13 with a three-game series against North Dakota at Baum Stadium. Arkansas will also host Loyola Marymount and California at home in the nonconference, and play Central Florida, South Alabama and Maryland at a tournament in Mobile, Alabama the second week of the season.
Arkansas opens its SEC season with a road trip to defending national champion Vanderbilt, followed by back-to-back home series against LSU and Ole Miss. Other SEC home series are against Kentucky, Mississippi State and Tennessee, while the Razorbacks will travel to Alabama, Texas A&M, Auburn and Georgia.
The games against the Crimson Tide will be played at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium in the suburbs of Birmingham while Alabama's on-campus stadium is being renovated.
Arkansas will play Memphis twice at minor league ballparks. The Razorbacks will be the host team for a March 24 game in North Little Rock, while the Tigers will be the host team the following day at Autozone Park in Memphis.
Arkansas will also travel to Creighton during the final week of the regular season. The Blue Jays play their home games at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska, which is the home of the College World Series.
The Razorbacks finished last season with a 40-25 record. Arkansas returns seven position players who started at least 24 games last year and its Friday night pitcher for the 2015 season.
The Razorbacks will also welcome in a freshman class rated the second-best in the country by Perfect Game USA.

Arkansas freshman arrested on DWI charge
FAYETTEVILLE — A freshman on Arkansas' baseball team was arrested Saturday and charged with driving while intoxicated.
Nathan Rodriguez, 19, was pulled over at 2:22 a.m. Saturday for making an improper turn onto Martin Luther King Blvd., according to his arrest report. The arresting officer stated in the report that he smelled alcohol on Rodriguez's breath and performed a field sobriety test, which Rodriguez failed.
Rodriguez was booked into the Washington County jail, where his blood alcohol level registered .086 - more than four times the legal limit for under age offenders in the state of Arkansas. Rodriguez was released later Saturday morning on a $1,055 bond.
Rodriguez was rated one of the top prep catchers coming out of high school in his home state of California. Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn indicated last week that Rodriguez would battle for the starting job in 2015.

University of Arkansas baseball coach Dave Van Horn has announced the dates for the annual Red-White series.
The Razorbacks will be divided into two teams for the best-of-five series that starts at 3 p.m. Friday at Baum Stadium. Games two and three will be Sunday and Monday and the fourth and fifth games, if necessary, will be played Oct. 15 and Oct. 17.
The games are free and open to the public.
Good reason to get out and drink some beers and watch a winning team.
