How miserable the sips have become. Here is a solution for their situation according to one of their butt licking writers
LINK

quote:

AUSTIN, Texas – Overwhelmingly, the two most popular football teams in Texas are the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Longhorns.
There are a lot of football fans here, so it's not like Texas A&M or the Houston Texans or Baylor or UTEP or even those high schools with 20,000-seat stadiums, like in Mesquite and Odessa, are without support.
Still, it's the 'Horns and 'Boys that are the traditional obsessions around here. If you are into one, there’s a good chance you also like the other. Not universally, but there’s plenty of crossover.
They love big in Texas and these are the teams with the big histories, big stages and big expectations.
And right now, bad realities.
On the eve of a Dallas season that offers little promise, Texas was humiliated by BYU, 41-7. It was a dispiriting whipping that offers a thud to whatever momentum new coach Charlie Strong had created.
"It's an embarrassment to the program," Strong said. "And it's an embarrassment to this university."
The Cowboys can only hope for better when San Francisco visits three hours up I-35 in Arlington on Sunday. Coming off three consecutive 8-8 seasons under uninspiring Jason Garrett, with a defensive line seemingly full of holes and no major off-season addition, preseason hype is centered mostly on whether they should have drafted Cleveland's backup QB and how much Johnny Walker Blue Jones will drink in his luxury box.

Would Jerry Jones be willing to hire a coach with no NFL experience? (AP)
For the old-line 'Boys and 'Horns fan, it looks like a gloomy fall, yet one with a single remedy that could aid both entities, breathing life into Dallas and easing the challenge ahead in Austin.
Jerry Jones needs to hire Kevin Sumlin.
Is early September too early to start discussing the hiring and firing of coaches? Not if you’re a Cowboys fan. Garrett will get a chance to prove what he hasn’t proven yet, but if it’s more of the same, let the speculation begin.
Naturally it will involve Sumlin, no matter the statements of non-interest or possible contract hurdles or his love of all things Aggie. This is the price of the Texas A&M coach becoming the biggest football force in the state. In three years he's turned the long-middling program into a swashbuckling winner on the field and absolute juggernaut on the recruiting trail.
His offense, both in College Station and previously at the University of Houston creates quarterbacks, spins scoreboards and thrills fans. His presence in locker rooms, on recruiting visits and during media appearances is a combination of capable and cool. He's 50, but seems younger. Players worship him. Everyone respects him.
He's exactly the kind of bold move Jones likes to think he's about, an absolute coaching star whose only drawback is a lack of an NFL pedigree. Considering the league is trying to copy everything his system entails, that shouldn't matter.
If the hot seat that Garrett occupies goes as predicted, Sumlin is the smart bet for Jones, who made his fortune as an oil wildcatter rolling the dice all over this state. This would be a calculated gamble.
Meanwhile, by getting him away from A&M, the Longhorns benefit by the disappearance of a guy who is currently lapping them in terms of recruiting, excitement and relevance.
Charlie Strong proved he was an excellent football coach at Louisville and that hasn't changed. This was ugly, real ugly, like painfully ugly, but in the long-term, he'll find success here in Austin.

Life after Johnny Football hasn't been rocky for Kevin Sumlin thus far. (Getty)
This is still UT, mind you. Incredible facilities. Unsurpassed support. World-class city. Tremendous academics. Deep tradition. Burnt Orange and Bevo and cheerleaders in chaps.
It sure would be still be nice to get rid of Sumlin. There isn't a Longhorns fan alive who wouldn't love to see him go away and torture someone else, and if he could go and revitalize their favorite pro team, hey, all the better.
Deep down they'd love to root for the guy. Everyone seems to love him, most notably the best players across the state's vast high school system. Rivals.com ranks 39 Texas kids as 4-star or better prospects in the Class of 2015. A&M has 12 of them committed. Texas has just two.
If there was one thing Texas could always count on through the years, it was getting the best in-state prospects. But not anymore, and considering the way BYU dominated, it's in dire need.
Even if Sumlin were to leave, A&M would be a formidable challenge, what with its expanding stadium and SEC membership. UT would take its chances, though.
Now, Sumlin might not even consider Jones' Cowboys. He's on the radar of the entire NFL, including teams with better general managers. He's said in the past he loves the chance to coach young people, college kids. He’s passionate about his love for the school. He undoubtedly would love to win a national title at Texas A&M.
There have also been reports that his agreement signed last year with A&M prohibits him from “entertaining” NFL offers. What that means, or how it’s legally enforced, is anyone’s guess.
Jones has said he's willing to spend any amount of money to win another Super Bowl, though. Well, here would be a chance to prove it.
It's still early September, but if you're a traditional football fan in these parts, you're facing a forgettable season in Austin and a potentially listless one in the Metroplex.
If that's how it plays out, well, a solution for both ailments sits over there in College Station.
Jerry Jones can find him by following the roars of the crowd.

A disaster from the very first sentence.

Well... I suppose it was really not a bad idea compared to the last one I saw seriously kicked around over there by a small group after last season.

There was a group that seriously thought if they offered Pete Carrol the job at Texas he would be crazy not to accept it. Yes, that Pete Carrol. Guess they figured after winning the super bowl he would be ready to jump at the chance of a lifetime to leave the NFL to coach at Texas.

You can't make this stuff up.

The unmitigated hubris of their fanbase seeped into their actual athletic department and precipitated their own decline.

And now we get to read "articles" like this

It really is a shame that the Texas won't "lock horns" with A&M anymore. This massive swing in the fortunes of the two schools would've been a great chance for the Aggies to reel off several wins in a row and improve that overall record.

I know Texas is also a massive school with a lot of resources, but so is A&M and I really don't understand how the series history got out of hand. With that said their decline couldn't have come at a worse time for them as the Aggies immediately jumped out of the Horns' shadow and straight into the arms race that the SEC demand.

When SC joined the SEC we were so far behind the conference it was laughable. A nice, big stadium sure but we didn't spend nearly the money required to compete in the SEC from 1992-Spurrier / Hyman. As a reward we got hammered for nearly 20 years, A&M won't suffer that fate.

A&M didn't admit women until 1965, and it took until 1974 for the civilian students to outnumber the cadets.

How did that affect the football game? I suppose the student body wasn't as big and thus the alumni base wasn't as big to support the program?

I know the origin the "sips" slur, but I don't know the detailed A&M-t.u. series. Is there an obvious correlation of America's war time years and the football series results?

Two things were at play for the series record to be as lopsided as it is: no scholarship limits, and the fact that TAMU was a small military school. Comparing the series record has to be done in the context that a&m was basically a service academy that the big state school sitting on all the state's talent was SUPPOSED to beat.

Look at the series record since the imposition of scholarship limits and it's basically a dead heat. Hell, it's been pretty even for the majority of CFB fans who are alive today.

but so is A&M
we weren't for the vast majority of our history. We have only been a large university with a large amount of resources for the past 25/30 years or so. Before that we had the resources of a division two school. We were a small, all male, military college. Them keeping track of games from the 50s and 60s is like us keeping track of our series against Lamar today

It's simple.

The game wasn't played in College Station until 1915.

From 1894-1914, the record was 4-15-2. After A&M won three straight from 1909-1910, t.u. refused to play unless Charlie Moran was fired. (hence no games between 1912-1914).

From 1915-1939, the record was 11-12-2

From 1940-1953, A&M lost all but 2 games, going 1-12-1. (WWII and Korean War)

From 1954-1957 (Bear Bryant), A&M went 1-3.

From 1958-1967, A&M went 1-9. (1967 was Gene Stallings' first season, also that was during Vietnam and the changing of the school)

A&M lost the next 5 between 1968-1972. (Again, Vietnam)

1973 was the first year of the 85-man scholarship limitations. Pre-Jackie, A&M went 4-6 (1973-1982)

Under Jackie Sherrill, A&M went 5-1 against t.u., hence the effort to get rid of him.

Under Slocum, prior to the arrival of Mack Brown, A&M went 6-3 vs. t.u.

From 1998-2002, t.u. got Mack Brown, OU got Bob Stoops, LSU got Nick Saban, Oklahoma State got Les Miles, and Texas Tech got Mike Leach.

During that period, A&M went 1-3 vs. t.u.

Dennis Franchione went 2-3 (2003-2007) and Mike Sherman went 1-3 (2008-2011).

BLUF: During the periods of WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, A&M went 2-26-1.

With a series of 37-76-5, the wartime years represents a massive swing. Let's assume for revisionist historian's sake that A&M won half of those 26 losses. Now you get a series record of 50-63-5.

Like many said before, the scholarship limitation "modern era" record looks like this:

4-6
5-1
6-3
1-3
2-3
1-3

That's 19-19.

CGSC nailed it. A few years back my wife got me the ESPN CFB encyclopedia. Looking through all the years and then comparing to real time what was happening with scholarships and wartime it's very easy to see why the series is lopsided.

In the modern era the series is very even. And even filled with a lot more dominant series from the Ags.

So I gathered. It's kind of crazy. SC and Clemson have had their battles legislatively since Clemson came into being, the two student bodies nearly got in a relatively substantial shoot-out that ended the series for a few years to cool down but was revived soon enough. When all this expansion took place and some rivalries started getting canceled one legislator suggested having legislation to ensure that SC and Clemson play each other. I love to hear that for two reasons:

1) It shows that no matter what SC and Clemson love to hate each other too much to not play.
2) SC and Clemson love to have each other so much that that legislation got no where because there was never any consideration to cancel the series.

To SC's credit, SC has had some huge slumps against Clemson.. even bigger ones against UGA (which we played nearly annually pre-SEC) but never canceled the series due to "unevenness". I think Gamecock fans would be in an uproar if those two weren't on the schedule every year.

Not sure what exactly that effort will look like, but they want Sumlin gone--make no mistake about it.

I cannot stand that university.

The need to worry about Gaylor and their coach that they face every year not Texas A&M. Gaylor beating them on the field and taking the recruits from them yet they are talking about Texas A&M. We are in their heads
